Shrewsbury International School is a selective international day school in Bang Kho Laem District, Bangkok, Thailand.[1] It was established in 2003. Although it is an independent school, it is closely affiliated to Shrewsbury School in the UK. The school is divided into 3 schools: Pre prep school, Prep school and Senior school, which includes sixth form. The school follows the British curriculum.
History of Shrewsbury International School
Shrewsbury International School was founded in 2003. The current Principal is Mr. Stephen Holroyd who arrived at Shrewsbury International School in 2006. Mr Holroyd worked at Shrewsbury School in the UK for 20 years first as an English teacher and rising to be Deputy Master before his appointment to its sister school in Bangkok.
House System
The house system at Shrewsbury was established in 2007. Students throughout the school are split into six houses with each house named after a Nobel Peace Prize winner. The names of the houses are Mandela, King, Schweitzer, Suu Kyi, Teresa and Williams, which were decided by the students of the school in a vote. Students compete in a range of friendly competitions and events to gain points for their house and to win the house shield at the end of each academic year. The house system provides the framework for students’ extra-curricular activities, encouraging participation in sporting and cultural activities and promoting leadership development. Events and competitions that are part of the house system include the House Music Competition, the House Film Competition, the House Drama competition Scene Fest, the House Cross Country competition, the House Cheerleading Competition, Sports Day, Swimming Gala and International Day. Each house is designated a House Captain and two deputy Captains to supervise and prepare their house members for each events.
Music
The music programme is currently led by Director of Music Mr. Jonathan Ling. Mr. Mark Stingle, who was the former vocal teacher left the school in 2012. The programme of concerts during the year includes the Music Scholars Concert, the Last Night of the Proms concert and a range of Junior and Senior recitals. Musical talent is nurtured and supported through a Scholarship programme. In the past, the orchestra and choir of Shrewsbury has been performing at major concerts and venues around the globe such as St. John Smith Square in London where the two orchestras from Shrewsbury UK and Bangkok reunite to play Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and the Forbidden City Concert Hall at Beijing where the Shrewsbury choir sang the Mozart Requiem. The musical quality of the department is reflected by the number of students who leave the school to attend top music conservatoires and leading universities such as the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Michigan. In the past the Shrewsbury orchestra has been under the baton of renowned English violinist and conductor Leo Phillips, a founding member of the Nash Ensemble and leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In recent times, the orchestra has been conducted by the director of Music at Shrewsbury UK and musical director of Opera Severn John Moore for the annual Last Night of the Proms concert at the school.[citation needed] In November 2012, a whole new music department opened, situated on the entire fourth floor of the Prep School Building. This new music department housed 18 practice rooms, a fully soundproof drum room which is often used by the older kids who form bands together, a recital hall with amazing acoustics, 3 classrooms and an Apple Mac room.
Drama
Drama and acting form a major part of life at Shrewsbury International School. Pupils in the Junior School participate in class-led assemblies, performance poetry and full-scale year group shows. In the Senior School Drama is taught to GCSE and A level. Students participate in theatrical activity ranging from sketches to Shakespeare. Musical theatre is always popular and, in recent years productions have included: Bugsy Malone, Little Shop of Horrors, The Threepenny Opera, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The current Head of Drama is Mr. Steven Fry. Students in the Senior School also appear in plays directed by the English department. Recent examples include A Midsummer Night's Dream, Who's Life is it Anyway? and Master Harold and the Boys. In Late 2012, Mr. Peter Fanning came to Bangkok on a 6 month stay to direct and organize Shrewsbury Bangkok's sister school's original play, The Bubble. The students rehearsed for 6 months and the performance was truly professional with its microphones attached to the actors/actresses ears, an orchestral pit and amazing sounds and lights. The performed for three nights, with the third night being the VIP Matinee performance with special guests such as the British Ambassador in Bangkok, His Excellency Mark Kent and various governors from the UK. Every year, the school runs 'Scene Fest', an Inter House Drama competition in which students direct, produce, design and choreograph sections from plays they are given - ranging from musicals to Shakespeare. They have now started running (since 2011) a student directed show called 'Fusion'. This show contained lots of little acts by students who could do as they choose, but it was put together by the teachers in the English and Drama departments. Singing, Dancing, Skits, Acting and mimes are all shown during Fusion and it gives the students a chance to things independently.
Alumni
Even though Shrewsbury International School is a relatively new school compared to other Bangkok international schools, the school has managed to send a large amount of its students to top notch universities in the UK, the USA and abroad. These universities include Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale and The Parsons New School to name a few. Shrewsbury encourages its students to follow their dreams, goals and aspirations.
