Sholing F.C. is a semi-professional football club based in Sholing in Southampton, Hampshire, England. In 2010, they changed their name from VT F.C. to its present name. They won the Hampshire League twice in their history. In the 2008–09 season, they reached the 4th round of the FA Vase. They are currently members of the Wessex League Premier Division.

History

Vosper Thorneycroft FC

Vosper Thorneycroft were formed in 1960 as a successor to Thornycrofts (Woolston) F.C., which had folded eight years earlier, although teams from the Woolston Works had competed as early as 1878 under various names. In this incarnation they initially played in the Southampton Junior League. After a number of successful years, they were promoted to the Hampshire League Third Division in 1991, rising to the Second Division the following season, followed by the First Division in 1998. A year later they were relegated when the league was re-organised, but at their first attempt they won promotion to the new Premier Division.

In 2003 Vospers were renamed as VT FC, after their parent company, and in their first season under their new name they were Hampshire League champions and won promotion to the Wessex League.

VTFC arrived in the Southern League Division One South and West for the 2009–10 season when they finished 4th. They lost in the subsequent play-offs to Bridgwater Town and were also runners-up in the Southern League Cup, losing on penalties to Cambridge City.

Sholing FC

In June 2010 the club changed its name to Sholing FC as the parent company VT Group no longer existed. The change also reflected the district in which the club is based.

During the 2010–11 season the club topped the league for months before a string of poor results saw them beaten to the title by AFC Totton by two points. Promotion was still possible through the play-offs but they lost out for the second year in a row, this time in the final 1–0 to Frome Town.[2] In the Hampshire Senior Cup, after beating Conference South side Farnborough 3–1 in Farnborough, Sholing went down in the final 3–1 to AFC Totton at St Mary's Stadium.

In 2011–12, slightly inconsistent form saw them slip to fourth place, but still good enough to qualify for the play-offs. However a 1–0 defeat away to Gosport Borough put paid to their promotion hopes for another year.

On 14 March 2013 the club chairman announced that for financial reasons the club would be resigning from the Southern League at the end of the 2012–13 season and would drop down to the Wessex League Premier Division for the 2013–14 campaign.[3]

Sholing play their home games at Silverlake Arena, VT Sportsground, Portsmouth Road, Southampton, Hampshire, SO19 9PW.
