Shikohabad is a city and a municipal board in the Firozabad district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The city has been famous since the British Period for its Glass Industry. Shikohabad has one of the oldest Bulb and Electric Tube manufacturing units (Hind Lamps Ltd), established in 1945, which was the largest in Asia at that time — the company is now owned by Bajaj Electricals. The vast factory premises also have a residential area with all the modern amenities of a township. This industrial unit has provided a major boost to the business of traders and other service providers in the city.

Bateshwar, a famous Hindu pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva, and also a famous Jain Tirth on the banks of River Yamuna, is situated 22 kilometres south of Shikohabad. Shikohabad falls under the Taj Trapezium Zone.

Geography

Shikohabad is located at 27°06′N 78°36′E / 27.1°N 78.6°E / 27.1; 78.6.[1] It has an average elevation of 163 metres (534 feet). The river Sirsa flows between the main city and the railway station.

History

The old name of Shikohabad was Mohammad Mah (the name still exists as Mohmmad mah near Tahsil and kotwali) and Shikohabad was named after a famous person of the Mughal era called Dara Shikoh the eldest of brothers of Emperor Aurangzeb. In its present form, the town has hardly any recognizable evidence of that era. Shikohabad was ruled under the estate of Labhowa from 1794–1880. The Rajas of Labhowa of Jhala dynasty were well known to the Mughal rulers and their generals and along with them controlled over 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi) of this area. Shikohabad is a brahmin dominated place.[2]

Accessibility

New Delhi is 273 km (170.00 miles) from Shikohabad.[3] The nearest airport is 65 km away at Agra. Shikohabad railway station is located on Delhi Mugalsarai main line of North Central Railway having direct connection to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Agra, Kanpur, Jaipur, Lucknow , Mainpuri and Farrukhabad. It is also well connected by road with all major cities of the state and region as it is located on NH-2 also the State road-85 to Etah and the state road-84 to Mainpuri.

As per provisional data of 2011 census, Shikohabad had a population of 107,300, out of which males were 50,107 and females were 50,283. The literacy rate was 81.68 per cent.[4]

Education

Puratan Saraswati vidya mandir & PRT saraswati inter college are of the most reputed schools in shikohabad. The colleges prepares students for exams like IIT, AIEEE, CLAT (common law admission test), CAT and many more. Although it is a small town, in addition to a large number of intermediate colleges such as Gyan Deep Senior Secondary School, Young Scholars Academy, etc, it also has many degree colleges namely; Adarsh Krishna Mahavidyalaya (formerly known as Ahir College),Paliwal Inter College, Bhagawani Devi Maheshwari Girls Degree College, Narain Post Graduate College, Paliwal Post Graduate Degree college, TTS inter college, Sanskrit Mahavidhyalay etc. These colleges offer courses in Science, Arts and Agriculture streams. There is an Engineering College, Five Post Degree(PG) Colleges and more than ten inter colleges in Shikohabad. shauryal Inter college Shikohabad In 2009,Distict level math test,Paliwal Inter College student Ravi Pratap Singh get 100 marks in this Test.

Religious Places

Shikohabad has been famous for some temples. Kali Devi at the Bara Bazaar is famous for its beautiful idol of Somya Kali where people flock at the time of religious festivals. There is also a Lord Ganesha Temple situated at Bara Bazar which is the only temple with Lord Ganesha statue in district. Shitala Maa Temple situated at Bara Bazar is very famous temple. Banke Bihari Temple which is known as Kila wala Mandir is famous for its peace.Balaji Temple situated near the Agra road is known for the Hindu God Hanuman pathwari mandir.

There is a famous temple of Lord Shiva in "Mela vala baag", the temple location in itself is too calm and serene and it is believed that Lord Shiva resides in the temple and an actual snake can be seen roaming in the temple premises around midnight.

There is Also a vast Jain Mandir which is situated at Jain Streat behind Punjab National Bank. There is also an old famous mosque, Jama Masjid, believed to be built by Dara Shikoh, is situated in "Bara Bazar".

Now these days Shikohabad is direct connected to Noida via Taj Expressway which is merged in NH2. jain mandie is also delopening
