Shelekhov (Russian: Шелехов, IPA: [ˈʂɛlʲɪxəf]) is a town and the administrative center of Shelekhovsky District in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, located 20 kilometers (12 mi) southwest of Irkutsk, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: 47,943 (2010 Census);[5] 47,520 (2002 Census);[8] 47,702 (1989 Census).[9]
History
It was founded in May 1953 due to the construction of an aluminum plant.[citation needed] In 1956, it was named Shelekhov after a Russian explorer Grigory Shelikhov. For unknown reasons, the authorities used the incorrect, although popular, spelling of his last name. In 1962, Shelekhov was granted town status.[citation needed]
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Shelekhov serves as the administrative center of Shelekhovsky District,[3] to which it is directly subordinated.[2] As a municipal division, the town of Shelekhov is incorporated within Shelekhovsky Municipal District as Shelekhovskoye Urban Settlement.[4]
Sports
The Canada-United States match of the Bandy World Championship for women 2012 was played in Shelekhov.[10] Irkutsk has been awarded the 2014 World Championships for men and some of the matches will be played in Shelekhov,[11][12] at the Stroitel Stadium.
