Shelby Harris (March 31, 1901 – July 25, 2012) was an American supercentenarian.^[1] Harris was Illinois's oldest living person at the time of his death. He became one of the 100 oldest men ever on October 24, 2011, aged 110 years 207 days.

Biography

Harris was born in the state of Indiana. He grew up in southern Indiana in a town called Ayrshire. During his youth, he started working in the coal mines in that area until he was offered a job at the Union Malleable (now John Deere) foundry. At the age of 41, Harris joined the Army to serve in World War II, but due to a broken ankle, he did not make it out of basic training. By that time, he was separated from his wife and children.

Harris actively served as a deacon for his church up until he was 102, and entered a Rock Island nursing home at the age of 105. He was a great-great-great-grandfather at the time of his death. His youngest grandson is 57 years old. Harris was seemingly a lifelong Democrat voting for John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Barack Obama in 2008.^[2]

On June 1, 2012, at the age of 111 years and 63 days, Harris became the oldest man to have ever been born in Indiana, surpassing the age of Henry Pfeiffer (1881-1992).

Harris died on July 25, 2012, aged 111 years and 116 days.,^[3]

Longevity attributes

He credited his longevity to God, and his grandson said he took good care of himself and still had a good memory. When Harris signed up for the war, his height and weight were recorded as 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m) and 134 pounds (61 kg).
