Shawn Porter (born October 27, 1987 in Akron, Ohio) is an undefeated American professional boxer in the Welterweight division. He is known for being Manny Pacquiao's main sparring partner in his super bout against Miguel Cotto.[2][3] He is currently the IBF World welterweight champion.
Amateur career
He compiled an astounding amateur record of 276-14.[4] In 2007 he won the World Golden Gloves Championship but at the PanAm Games Shawn was knocked out in the second round by Cuban Emilio Correa.[5] Though he boasts amateur victories[6] over current pro prospects Daniel Jacobs, Demetrius Andrade, Edwin Rodriguez, Shawn Estrada, and Jonathan Nelson, he came up just short in qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Olympics team.[7] Porter is a graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.[8] There he earned all conference his junior and senior year.[citation needed]
Pro career
Porter is trained and managed by his father Kenny Porter in Las Vegas, Nevada.[9]
Shawn won his first Championship belt, the Interim WBO NABO Light Middleweight title against Russell Jordan on ESPN's Friday Night Fights.[10][11] On April 16, 2010 he knocked out veteran Raul Pinzon in just one round.[12]
Move to Welterweight
In July 2010, Porter beat Ray Robinson in his first fight at Welterweight.[13]
His record improved to 22-0-1 after defeated former World champion Julio Diaz by decision on September 12, 2013, retaining the NABO title and winning the vacant IBF North American title as a result.
Porter won the IBF Welterweight Championship Title after defeating Devon Alexander on December 7, 2013.[14]
