Shaun Kenny-Dowall (born 23 January 1988 in Brisbane, Australia) is a professional rugby league footballer for the Sydney Roosters of the National Rugby League (NRL). A New Zealand international representative centre, he has played his entire NRL career to date with the Roosters, winning the 2013 Premiership with them.

Background

Kenny-Dowall lived in Ngaruawahia, New Zealand where he attended Ngaruawahia High School until he was 16 years old. As a junior he played for the Ngaruawahia Panthers.[1] He was a New Zealand Warriors junior but was unwanted by the club before moving to Sydney in 2004.[2] Kenny-Dowall was selected for the Junior Kiwis in 2006.

Professional playing career

2000s

Kenny-Dowall joined the Sydney Roosters and made his National Rugby League debut in the 2007 season. At the end of the season he was selected for the New Zealand All Golds to play against the Northern Union in October as part of the 2007 All Golds Tour. He missed out on selection for New Zealand for the 2007 Baskerville Shield Test series against the Great Britain Lions but was selected for the test against France due to the injury of Taniela Tuiaki.[3]

He was named in the New Zealand training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup but was not selected. He has been announced in the 2010 Kiwis 'train on' squad for the Four Nations.[4] Instead, Kenny-Dowall played for the New Zealand Māori which met the Indigenous Dreamtime team in a curtain-raiser to the 2008 World Cup.[5]

2010s

Kenny-Dowall played for the Roosters at centre in their 2010 NRL Grand Final loss to the Dragons. He cemented his position in the centres for the Kiwis in the 2010 Rugby League Four Nations scoring three tries including one in the final. He combined with the great and talented Benji Marshall, Jason Nightingale and Nathan Fien to set up the series winning 79th minute try. Kenny-Dowall's fine form throughout 2010 saw him coming runner up to Marshall in the Rugby League World Golden Boot award, where he made centre in the team of the year.[6]

In 2011 in was selected in the NRL All Stars team. Playing off the bench he scored a try in their 28-12 win.

For the 2013 Anzac Test, Kenny-Dowall was selected to play for New Zealand at centre in their loss again Australia.

He played in the Roosters victory in the 2013 NRL Grand Final, revealing after the match he had played for the length of the game despite breaking a tooth and fracturing his jaw in an early encounter in the match.[7] The injury forced him to miss the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

  • in 2010 he scored a personal best of 20 tries in the regular season.
  • In 2010 he was nominated for the Dally M Centre of the Year award. The prize was ultimately awarded to Manly's Jamie Lyon.
  • In 2010 against the Wests Tigers in the Finals he scored a try in the 100th minute of extra time off an intercept to win the game for the Roosters 15–19.
  • In 2010 was runner up to Benji Marshall in Rugby League World Golden Boot award. Also named in team of the year.
