Shannon McDonnell (born 5 August 1987 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian professional rugby league player for the Hull FC of the European Super League. He previously played for the Wests Tigers and more recently the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League competition. McDonnell primarily plays at fullback.

Career

A student of Mount Carmel High School, McDonnell was a NSW under-19s representative[2] and in 2006, was selected as an Australian Junior Kangaroo.

Having played one game for Wests Tigers in 2005, McDonnell was named as the probable replacement for winger Pat Richards, if he was unable to overcome an ankle injury to take his place in the 2005 grand final team.[2] As NRL Premiers Wests faced Super League champions Bradford Bulls in the 2006 World Club Challenge. McDonnell played on the wing in the Tigers' 30-10 loss. McDonnell was eligible for Ireland's 2008 Rugby League World Cup campaign.[3][4] Although named in the Ireland training squad for the World Cup,[5] he was forced to withdraw through injury.[6]

In May 2009, the Wests Tigers released McDonnell from the remainder of his contract so he could take up a position with the Newcastle Knights for the rest of the 2009 season.[7]

After the conclusion of the 2011 season, McDonnell was released by the Knights.[8]

He then signed with Hull KR in the Super League, following former Knights assistant coach, Craig Sandercock.

In 2013 he moved across Hull to Hull F.C.. In his first year, he helped the team to the Challenge Cup final against Wigan Warriors where they were defeated 16-0.
