Shamim Haider Tirmazi (born September 13, 1939) is a Pakistani author, educationist, university professor and activist. He is best known for his Urdu novels Main Aur Maire (Khakay) and Hanstay Boltay Lafz.

Biography

Early life and education

Shamim Haider Tirmazi was born in 1939 in Sahiwal, Pakistan. He spent his childhood years and primary education in Sahiwal. Later he moved to Lahore. In Lahore he did his Bachelor of Arts in Urdu. He later completed his Bachelor of Education,[1] followed by his Master of Education and Ph.D in Education. Later on he went to Australia where he was awarded the UNESCO Fellowship in Education. He is fluent in a number of languages including English, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Persian.

Career

He has taught as a Lecturer, an Assistant Professor, an Associate Professor and a Professor in various Educational Institutions across Punjab and Islamabad; including the Bahauddin Zakariya University and the Allama Iqbal Open University. He is also an experienced educationist and has attended several meetings with the Pakistani Department of Education. He has also written and edited a number of textbooks for the Punjab Textbook Board including books on Education and Urdu.

Shamim Haider Tirmazi is a well known and respected author and novelist. He has written several well-received books. His most well-known works are:

  • Phuwar
  • Main Aur Mairay (Khakay)
  • Hanstay Boltay Lafz
  • Adab Aur Asar

He generally writes Urdu novels. Some of them like Main Aur Mairay (Khakay) are a collection of Short stories (usually Memoirs). He has received many awards for his books and with the course of time his book have gained a formidable audience, most of whom are from literary circles. The most popular of his books is Main Aur Mairay (Khakay), short-stories from which have found themselves in various text-books and collections. (All his books have been published by Beacon Books)

Education

Shamim Haider was one of the pioneers of the subject of Education in Pakistan. He laid the foundation stone for all further research and development by Pakistani institutions in the field. He is recognized by most as an authority on the subject. He was also a key factor in the reform of Primary Education and Secondary Education in Pakistan.[2] He also introduced modern assessment techniques in the previously out of date Pakistani Education system.[3] He is an enthusiastic educational activist and has spoken for educational reform in Pakistan in many official conferences. He has also given a number of speeches about the need for a modern and efficient Education system on various occasions.
