Shalimar Radio is a Pakistani Radio that operated through purchased Air Time from Channel 900 AM, from KALI (AM) in West Covina, California. This radio station was founded by a Pakistani American citizen group in Los Angeles, United States in 2008.[1] The radio's founders were Arsal Awan and Khalid Imran. The radio station primarily advocates freedom of speech promoting liberal islamic movements of modern times. It condemns terrorism and bigotry by hosting weekly Urdu lectures on The Quran delivered by Asarulislam Syed.[2][3]

History

Shalimar Radio is a liberal islamic radio with secular vision, founded in 2008 in Los Angeles, California. They oppose and condemn Shariah which they consider as medieval, pagan, and as the worst form of Theocracy totally alien to the precepts of original Islam. Instead, they strongly advocate establishment of Law of State based purely on The Quran that grants Universal values of life, liberty and pursuits of happiness, equally to all citizens, irrespective of religion, ethnic origin, caste, color and creed. They proclaim Islam not as a religion but as "a government of the Faithful and by the Faithful, established for the welfare of everybody". They respect and celebrate the ceremonial rites of all religions but denounce divisive superstitious rituals and beliefs. They proclaim and celebrate a God that guarantees to deliver equality and justice to everybody through a Government based on His laws. They consider all mankind as one nation under the law of one God. Islam is considered by them as the ultimate idea that holds the key to the human problem. They believe that only Islam can deliver mankind from various systems of human exploitation.

They advocate that whereas the future happiness and prosperity of the entire human race depends on Islam, therefore it is imperative to establish a Modern Islamic Caliphate, founded on principles of a transparent Democracy. They believe that establishment of a modern Islamic Caliphate was the goal of Pakistan. This goal could not be achieved because of the narrow mindedness of the Mullahs. Asarul'Islam claims that hijacked Islam needs to be liberated and Shalimar Radio is a movement that enables them to march towards this goal. He believes that the establishment of a modern Islamic caliphate in Pakistan will eradicate the Mullahs. The Shalimar Radio movement aims to enlighten the Muslims of the entire world and to bring them on one platform through love, denouncing sectarian and political affiliations in which they were born into. Their core belief is Islam and world peace, through equality and justice, based on the law of God. They salute and revere the founder of Islam, Muhammad and all Prophets and Apostles including Lord Krishna and Buddha who according to their believe, delivered to mankind the principles of social equality as the only genuine ideology for peace in the world.

Impact

Liberal Muslims generally claim that they are returning to the principles of the early Ummah and to the ethical and pluralistic intent of their scripture, the Quran.[4] They distance themselves from some traditional and less liberal interpretations of Islamic law, as they consider these to be culturally-based and without universal applicability. The reform movement uses monotheism (tawhid) as an organizing principle for human society and the basis of religious knowledge, history, metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics, as well as social, economic and world order.[5]

Quran lectures

Asarul'Islam's iTunes Quran lectures.

Quran lectures are hosted by Asarul’Islam Syed, Pakistani-American neurologist and psychiatrist from Bakersfield, California.[6] He was a pupil of Pakistan’s most renowned Quranic scholar and thinker, Ghulam Ahmed Pervez. The lectures are archived on Quaideazam website[3] and are popularly known as Asarulislam Lectures[7] on iTunes. Asarul’Islam delivers the rational message of The Quran from Shalimar Radio in Los Angeles every Saturday at noon.
