The song is the last by the legendary group to reach the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart: the song also crossed over to the pop chart, reaching number twenty-six on the Billboard Hot 100.[1]

The song was also covered by Phoebe Snow, Etta James on her 1989 album Seven Year Itch and many other singers. Aerosmith announced in May 2012 that they are covering the song on their upcoming album Music from Another Dimension!, on which it ended up a Japan bonus track.
