Shakeel Ahmad (born 2 January 1956) was a member of the 12th and 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Madhubani constituency of Bihar and is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) political party. He is national spokesperson of Indian National Congress. He belongs to a family with Congress background. His father, Late Shakoor Ahmad and his grand father, Late Ahmad Ghafoor were freedom fighters as well as Congress MLAs. His father was a Congress MLA for five terms since 1952 and grand father was a Congress MLA in 1937.

Early life

Shakeel Ahmad was born to Shakoor Ahmad and Hajra Khatoon in Bishanpur, Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He is a Medical graduate M.B.B.S. from S.K. Medical College, Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

Political career

Shakeel Ahmad was first elected as MLA in 1985 and then in 1990 and in 2000. He was Cabinet Minister for Medical Education and Family Welfare from March 2000 to May 2004. Dr. Shakeel Ahmad was also President of Bihar Pardesh Congress Committee from December 2000 to June 2003. He was elected for Lok Sabha in 1998 and again in 2004. He is also a national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress Party. He was Minister of State in the Ministry of Communication & IT and Ministry of Home Affairs in the first Government of India headed by Dr Manmohan Singh as Prim Minister formed in 2004. In March 2011, he was appointed by Congress President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, as Party-In-Charge for the Sates of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Union Territory of Andoman-Nicobar group of Islands. In June 2013, he was promoted as a member of Congress Working Committee (CWC) and National General Secretory as in charge of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Union Territory of Chandigarh. Shakeel Ahmad was National Spokesperson of Indian National Congress from September 2007 to March 2011. He was once again appointed as spokesperson Indian National Congress in May 2013.
