Seth Sentry is an Australian hip hop artist from Melbourne. He is best known for his tracks The Waitress Song, My Scene, Float Away and Dear Science,[1] all of which received significant national airplay on Australian national radio station Triple J.[2][3]

Biography

Sentry's first public appearances were during live performances with Melbourne hip hop/drum 'n' bass outfit D.S.O.L. in 2003. In 2005 he reached third place in the Revolver Battles competition, in addition to organizing and appearing in a weekly hip hop night at The Old Colonial venue in Fitzroy—Sentry's involvement with the Old Colonial led to an appearance on the The Forthwrite Mixtape in 2007[4] and a guest appearance on Pez's 2008 album A Mind of My Own.[5]

After posting a number of songs on Triple J's Unearthed website, he was selected by Steph Hughes, host of the "Home & Hosed" programme, to be an Unearthed "Featured Artist". Sentry's contribution became the most downloaded track on the Unearthed website,[6][7] an achievement that was followed by a 31-date national tour with Pez[8] and the high rotation of "Simple Game", Sentry's second single, on Triple J.[9] Sentry's The Waitress Song then reached #31 in Triple J's 'Hottest 100' for 2009[10] and appeared on the compilation The Best Of Australian Hip Hop Vol. 1.[11]

In 2010 Sentry continued to tour and finalised the recording of his debut album with Melbourne producer Matik. In August 2010 he was a guest on Horrorshow's Our Song,[12] ahead of a national tour with the group, and Closer, a song by Australian hip hop artist 360.[13]

Sentry's debut album This Was Tomorrow was self-released on 14 September 2012 on the record label High Score Records (distributed by Inertia Records) and was selected as the Triple J feature album in the week of its release. On 30 September 2012 This Was Tomorrow debuted at #6 on the Australian Album chart and remained in the chart for five weeks.[14] Album singles "Dear Science" and "Float Away" placed in Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2012 at #26 and #57, respectively.[15]

Video footage, in which Sentry performs on the American late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, was published in April 2013 on the YouTube website. Sentry is featured performing "Dear Science" and "Float Away".[16][17]

Touring

Sentry's touring schedule has involved headline shows around Australia,[citation needed] as well as appearances at numerous festivals, such as Breath Of Life, Fat As Butter, Come Together, Sprung Festival, Big Day Out (Melbourne), Homebake, Hyperfest, Groovin The Moo and Triple J's One Night Stand.[18]

In May 2013, Sentry completed the 'Dear Science' Australian tour,[19] before announcing the larger 'Vacation' tour that will feature support from Mantra and Grey Ghost.[20]

Awards

In 2009 Sentry was nominated for an Unearthed J Award;[21] in 2012, Sentry won Channel V's Oz Artist Of The Year award.[22] In October 2013, Sentry's ARIA Award nomination in the "Best Urban Album" category was announced.[23]
