  • Indo-Pakistani War of 1965: Pakistan launches Operation Grand Slam, with the objective of capturing the vital town of Akhnoor in Jammu, so as to sever communications and cut off supply routes to Indian troops. Pakistani leader Ayub Khan states that "Hindu morale will not stand more than a couple of hard blows at the right time and place"[1] India responds by calling in its air force.
  • Born: Craig McLachlan, Australian actor and singer, in Long Jetty, New South Wales

  • Vietnam War: In a follow-up to August's Operation Starlite, United States Marines and South Vietnamese forces initiate Operation Piranha on the Batangan Peninsula, 23 miles (37 km) south of the Chu Lai Marine base.

  • The decommissioned East German training ship Albin Köbis is sunk as a target off Rosenort.[18]
  • USSR cruise ship Nadezhda Krupskaya runs aground off Stockholm, Sweden. All 94 passengers are returned to Stockholm by a Swedish ship.[19]
  • Born: Alexandra Lencastre, Portuguese actress, in Lisbon
  • Died: James Fitzmaurice, 67, Irish aviator

  • Fidel Castro announces that anyone who wants to can emigrate to the United States.
  • Taal Volcano in Luzon, Philippines, erupts, killing hundreds.
  • British ship Sir Joseph Rawlinson sinks after a collision with a hopper barge. Ten crew members are rescued by the tug Danube VIII, but nine others die.[21] The ship was raised in the following year.[22]
  • Aviator James Fitzmaurice is given a state funeral in Dublin.[23]
