Seoul Semiconductor Co., Ltd is a Korean company manufacturing LED devices. The company is listed on KOSDAQ. The company is producing LED packages in two plants in Ansan, Korea. The total production capacity is 4 billion LED packages per month.[2] Seoul Semiconductor has invested over 10% of sales revenue in R&D as a global LED manufacturer focusing on technology. In particular, the company owns the world’s leading a wide range of LED technology and production capacity in areas, such “nPola”, “Acrich” and deep UV LEDs, the world’s first commercially-produced AC LED.
In November 2006 Seoul Semiconductor announced it would be the first company to start selling in quantities LED light sources that can be plugged directly into 110 V or 230 V AC source. Previously using LED light sources has required the help of various converters. Lately a product development was released which provides a 90% increase in power efficiency and a THD lower than 25% to comply with the requirements of different countries, including DOE and others. Through IC technology, lighting manufacturers can directly plug Acrich2-based products into the wall without consideration of electrical conditions. The Acrich2 boards provide a replacement LED solution to replace 40-watt, 60-watt and 100-watt incandescent bulbs as well as MR16 halogen lamps and down lights.[3]
In July 2012 Seoul Semiconductor announced new product, called “nPola”, that it holds the unique patented technology rights to, has been under development by Seoul Semiconductor for over 10 years. The brightness has been dramatically improved by 5 times over the conventional LED based on equivalent die surface area. The company expects further improvements will increase this to more than 10 times existing LEDs.
Competitors of Seoul Semiconductor include among others Nichia, Cree, Lumileds, Everlight and Epistar.
The latest product of Seoul Semiconductor is LED ZC which is designed as a COB type and removes the need for the LED to be surface-mounted on to a metal plate, allowing manufacturers to bypass the chip connection process before use. Other popular COB type LED manufactureres are among others BridgeLux and Sharp Corporation.
