Sen ((Bengali: সেন , pronounced Shen) is a Bengali Hindu surname derived from the Sanskrit word for "Army", Sena (Sanskrit: सेना). In older times, the name was bestowed on people for doing an honourable, good deed, esp. a deed requiring intelligence.
It is found mainly in the east of the Indian Subcontinent; namely Bangladesh & West Bengal, India among Vaidya/Baidya and Kayastha/Kshatriya communities. Instances of the surname are also found in the Nepalese community.
