Semih Kaya (Turkish pronunciation: [semih kɑjɑ], born 24 February 1991) is a Turkish footballer who plays for Turkish Süper Lig club Galatasaray and the Turkish national team.

Club career

Galatasaray

He joined Galatasaray's youth academy from Altay's youth team when he was 15.

On 25 February 2007, when he was playing with older young players in the season of Süper Gençler Ligi (Super Teen League), in the match between Galatasaray and Beşiktaş J.K. at 5. minute of the game a kick from Batuhan Karadeniz came to his head, he collided, had to leave game and went to a hospital for a head surgery (Coagulation). When he woke up after the surgery, a nurse told him with humor : "When you recover, you will play for Fenerbahçe S.K. (football) and he replied : "Then leave me in the hospital".

The start of the 2008–2009 season saw interest in Semih with reports that Inter Milan were monitoring him.[1] Semih recently renewed his contract with Galatasaray, keeping him at the club until the end of 2015-2016 season.[2]

The interest in Semih has continued to grow and as of 8 January 2009, there is speculation of a move to either Arsenal or Barcelona as well as Inter Milan.

His first league appearance was against İstanbul B.B. on 19 February 2009.[3]

Gaziantepspor

He joined fellow Süper Lig club Gaziantepspor on loan in January 2010 for the remainder of the season.[4]

Kartalspor

In the summer of 2010 he signed for Turkish First League side Kartalspor on loan. On 18 October 2010 he scored 2 Goals in the A2 Lig game against Altay.[5]

Return to Galatasaray

2011-12 season

At the beginning of the 2011–2012 season, he wasn't selected in first eleven, but following injuries to other players, notably Gokhan Zan and fall in form of Servet Cetin, Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim gave him a chance to prove himself. Following a series of solid performances, he soon became first-choice centreback with Tomas Ujfalusi.

Kaya scored his first goal for the club against Samsunspor on the 7th of January 2012, in the 51st Minute in 2-0 comeback as the game ended 4-2 for Galatasaray.[6][7] In 2011-12 season, he played 30 games and was a key member of the championship-winning squad.

2012-13 season

Since the start of the 2012-13 Super Lig season, he has continued to be first choice centre-back for the club and country delivering calm and confident performances despite his age against top teams such as Manchester United and Holland. In a press conference after the game with Manchester United, Vice-President Ali Durust stated that the Red Devils has inquired Galatasaray for a possible acquisition of Semih. He played for 26 league games for the club at this season and took a critical role for the championship title.

2013-14 season

After the departure of coach Fatih Terim, he continued to play for the first team. Roberto Mancini used him as a center-back with Aurélien Chedjou in several league matches, and in the UEFA Champions League meeting against F.C. Copenhagen, which Galatasaray won 3-1.

International career

He has played for all levels of the Turkey national team including the Under-21 level despite his young age. On 29 February 2012, Semih Kaya made his debut for the Turkish national team against Slovakia in a 2-1 loss.[8][9]
