Scream (music club)
Scream was one of the most macabre underground music clubs in Los Angeles, CA from the mid-late 80s and into the 90's. Founded[1] by Dayle Gloria, the "Queen of the Sunset Strip"[2] and Michael Stewart, Scream hosted the most adventuresome rock bands, such as Jane's Addiction, 45 Grave and TSOL (True Sounds of Liberty).
The club was initially located in the building of Embassy Hotel downtown at 9th street and Grand Avenue. In the summer of 1987, it was kicked out from Embassy Hotel gathering around 4,000 "mourners" at closing night, and re-opened later the same year at the Park Plaza Hotel in the Wilshire District. Geffen Records has released "Scream: The Compilation" a collection of tunes from acts that have become staples at the renowned club.[3]
Other bands playing in the club were Red Hot Chili Peppers,[4] Faith No More, The Sea Hags, The Nymphs, Divine Weeks, Caterwaul, Living Colour, Sisters of Mercy and many others. Club's owner Mike Stewart came up with the name based on the famous Munch painting and his best friend Steve Elkins created the logo.[5] Advertising was largely based on the memorable and unique illustrated flyers produced by "Mad" Marc Rude[6] and left on store counters throughout Hollywood.
The Scream was used as a shooting location for several 80's films including the club scene in Less Than Zero,[7] and the club where Dr. & the Medics perform in Maid to Order.
