History

"SchilliX is an OpenSolaris-based live CD and distribution that is intended to help people discover OpenSolaris." - Jörg Schilling [1] [2] It was released on 17 June 2005, three days after the first release of OpenSolaris.

Mascot

The idea was brought in this mail from Jörg Schilling to the osol-discuss list. The links are the following: Link1 & Link2.

Developers

The initial developers were Jörg Schilling, Fabian Otto, Thomas Blaesing, and Tobias Kirschstein.

Accomplishments

Its developers claim that it is the first OpenSolaris distribution. Schilling purports to have the first "First pure OpenSolaris based boot CD[.]" - Jörg Schilling [3] The release version is 0.7.1i (September 6, 2010), which uses the Illumos[4][5] project for the build (once again being a first to make a release from a new open sourced build). The current release is 0.7.2 which is the first OpenSolaris based redistributable distro that allows to compile the OpenSolaris source base (onnv / Illumos).

Open Source Initiatives/Contributions

The SchilliX project created an OSS replacement for the K&R cpp needed by rpcgen, dtrace and the assembler. The following drivers were created by Shillix: NIC drivers, ae, and aperture.[6]

Future

Future releases will be based upon the Schillix-ON[7] project.

Siblings

There are many other distributions that are derivatives of OpenSolaris: e.g. BeleniX, MilaX, NexentaStor, StormOS and OpenIndiana.
