Saturnalia were a British psychedelic band, whose only album was claimed to be the world's first 3D picture disc.[1] It also gained a certain amount of notoriety[citation needed] by featuring the band members topless on one side of the picture disc.

The band, including former members of the band Horse, went on a headlining tour of the UK, culminating in a concert at London's Rainbow Theatre. The tour was not a financial success and the band disbanded soon afterwards.

Line-up

Magical Love

Their album, Magical Love, was produced by the former Yardbird, Keith Relf, and it was first released in February 1973.[1] The album contained somewhat occult themed, psychedelic / early progressive rock, resembling Jefferson Airplane.

The definitive version of Magical Love had a 28 page booklet about cosmology (written by Richard Gardner and Tammo de Jongh) and free love.

Track listing

1. "Magical Love"
2. "She Brings Peace"
3. "And I Have Loved You"
4. "Winchester Town"
5. "Traitor"
6. "Soul Song"
7. "Princess & The Peasant Boy"
8. "Dreaming"
9. "Step Out Of Line"

The process of making the picture disc (a laminate of cardboard with two transparent layers of vinyl) caused the record to be very noisy (bass rumble), so there were a few made in black vinyl with a white label. Customers who complained were sent the black vinyl disc free, and got to keep the picture disc as well.

Magical Love has been re-issued as a picture CD on World Wide Records (SPM-WWR-CD-0042) without a front cover, so it is possible to view the label through the clear plastic.
