Santosh Koli (2 February 1984 – 7 August 2013) was an Indian social activist and RTI campaigner working in Delhi. She died aged 29 in a hit-and-run accident. She was a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the party's candidate for Seemapuri constituency for the 2013 Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections.[1]
Background
Koli was one of the first employees at Parivartan — the NGO that Arvind Kejriwal co-founded in late 2002, marking the entry of Kejriwal, then an Indian Revenue Service officer, into social work.[2][3]
In June 2013, the AAP declared her as their election candidate for the reserved seat of Seemapuri in north-east Delhi,[4][5] The constituency is reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Death
On 30 June 2013, Koli and another party activist, Kuldeep Panwar, were travelling on a small motorcycle to the AAP offices. They were in Kaushambi in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, when a car rammed into the bike from behind and left the scene without stopping. Koli sustained brain injuries while Panwar had critical injuries. The impact of the collision was such that the motorcycle caught fire and was gutted within minutes of the collision. Subsequently, AAP members claimed that Koli had received threatening telephone calls warning her not to enter into politics.[4]
She had surgery to treat her serious brain injuries and was placed on life support.[6][7] Fellow AAP member Manish Sisodia expressed suspicion of a conspiracy behind the collision due to her political profile. She died as a result of her injuries on 7 August 2013.[8]
Charges of rash driving and attempted murder were filed against the car driver[7] but the person's identity remains unknown.[8] On 28 August 2013, the AAP announced that they had selected Koli's brother, Dharmender Singh Koli, to be their replacement candidate for the Seemapuri seat.[9] He won the seat in the ensuing elections.
