Santo António (Portuguese meaning "Saint Anthony") is a civil parish in the northeastern part of the municipality and a suburb of Funchal on the island of Madeira. It is located about 3 km northeast of central Funchal, and linked by roadways from Monte and Camacha. The largest civil parish in the archipelago, it extends the interior mountainous area of the southern part of the island, its northern and eastern portions covered in forests. The main activity in this area is commercial, since its mix or urban-residential population is linked economically to the activities of Funchal. Santo António is the birthplace of famous football player Cristiano Ronaldo, who was a leading player for Manchester United several years, member of the Portuguese national team, and from 2009 a forward for Real Madrid.
