"Sanity" is Killing Joke's second single from their sixth studio album, Brighter than a Thousand Suns. It was released on 30 October 1986.[1] The single peaked at number seventy in the UK Singles chart.[2]

Releases

Similar to "Adorations", which was released in several version including remixes, and on cassette, "Sanity" followed suit. The original album version was featured as an A-side on a 7" vinyl, with the B-side of "Goodbye to the Village", originally featured on the CD and cassette releases of Brighter than a Thousand Suns. The single was released under E'G Records in the UK and Virgin Schallplatten GmbH in Germany. A promo release of "Sanity" was released in Canada under Virgin Music (Canada) and in France under Virgin France S.A.. Sanity was remixed twice for a 12" vinyl, once for a German release under Virgin Schallplatten GmbH, a French release under Virgin France S.A., and a Canadian release under Virgin MusicVirgin Music (Canada). The second release of the remix was released in UK under E'G Records and in Germany under Virgin Schallplatten GmbH. The first release of the 12" vinyl, entitled "Sanity (the Insane mix)", was featured as the A-side. However, for the German release, according to Discogs,[1] given tracklisting on this release was inconsistent. Track A appeared as "Sanity (The Insane Mix)" (6:15) on the picture sleeve, while the inner label read "Sanity (The Roman Mix)" (5:09).

A 7" promo release of "Sanity" was released in Canada and France under their respected Virgin labels. "Sanity", the original album version, was featured as the A-side, and "Goodbye to the Village" was the B-side. The cassette release, entitled Sanity: The Cassette Maxi Single was Killing Joke's second cassette single to date. It featured an instrumental mix of "Sanity", "Goodbye to the Village", and "Wardance (Naval mix)".

In 1987, "Sanity" was re-released in America under Virgin Records as a 12" single and a 12" promo single. The single release featured "Sanity (the Roman mix)" as the A-side, and both "Sanity (Edited version)" and "Eighties" as B-sides. The promo single featured an a cappella version of "Sanity" as both an A-side and a B-side.

Throughout all the releases, "Sanity" was mixed by Julian Mendelsohn and Zeus B. Held, and produced by Chris Kimsey.

Reception

"Sanity" was original drummer, Paul Ferguson's last single before he departed in 1987, due to disagreements with Jaz Coleman regarding what kind of songs the band was writing. Soon, Paul Raven followed suit and left in 1988 before the release of Killing Joke's seventh studio album, Outside the Gate.

In 2007, after the Remastered release of Brighter than a Thousand Suns, Metal Storm described "Sanity" to have the same appeal as "Love Like Blood", which was essentially Killing Joke's biggest hit to date.
