Sandhawalia is a very small royal tribe of Punjab; . In the 1881 Census it was listed as one of the smallest of the tribes. Sandhawalia is a small jatt clan consisting of rich landowners.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh ruler of Punjab, and his family asserted lineage from this tribe.[1][2] The Sandhawalia tribe was not famous before Raja Randhir Singh and Ranjit Singh.[1][3][4] Sangat Singh (in his research), asserts a Sansi Caste lineage,[5][6][7][8][9] whereas Preminder Singh Sandhawalia records the family's genealogical history in his book differently as being of Jat lineage.
Distribution
The Sandhawalia tribe population was 682, in Amritsar district, during the 1911 British Punjab Census[10] and estimated to have grown to 2,046 within Amritsar district in 1994. Jatts are also found in surroundings villages of Gujranwala Dist.(Pakistan)in Khiali Shahpur,Noshera Sansi,Mian Sansi,Tehri Sansi,Kohlowala etc.who belong to Muslim religion[11]
