"Sanctuary" is the 23rd episode of the sixth season of the American medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and the 125th episode overall. Written by Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the show, and directed by Stephen Cragg, it premiered on ABC on May 20, 2010, as the first part of the two-hour season finale.

Plot

Meredith discovers she's pregnant and tells Cristina and wants to tell Derek, but Derek is 'in a mood' so she decides to tell him later. Gary Clark returns to the hospital to seek revenge for his wife's death (who was taken off life support under Derek's order). On his quest to find Derek he shoots Reed in the head, Alex in the chest, several hospital staff including nurses and security guards, and Charles in the abdomen. Reed dies instantly, Alex gets treated by Lexie and Mark in a conference room and Charles is treated by Bailey with the help of a patient. The hospital is put on lock-down and Callie and Arizona are stuck working together on a little girl with a ruptured appendix while arguing about their relationship. Derek attempts to talk Mr. Clark down but is eventually shot in the chest, witnessed by April, Cristina and Meredith.

Reception

During its original broadcast, "Sanctuary" was watched by an average of 13.93 million American viewers. It attained a 4.1/12 Nielsen rating/share.[1]

Wetpaint named it in December 2011 one of the 5 best episodes of Grey's Anatomy along with the second part "Death and All His Friends".[2]
