Samuel Wilson Collins Jr. (September 17, 1923 - March 22, 2012) was an American jurist and State Senator. Collins served as a Republican State Senator representing most of Knox County, including his residence of Rockland from 1976-1986.[1] In 1988, Collins was appointed to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, serving until 1994.[2]

Personal

A native of Caribou, Maine, Collins was born on the first day of the potato harvest, September 17, 1923, the son of Elizabeth E. (Black) and Samuel W. Collins.[3] He was the oldest of four sons and served as President of his graduating class at Caribou High School. He attended the University of Maine, from which he graduated a year early due to World War II. After graduation, he went to Arlington, Virginia to work for the United States Department of War in the field of intelligence.[1] He was the uncle of U.S. Senator Susan Collins. He graduated from the University of Maine and Harvard Law School before setting up a practice in Rockland, Maine. He died in March 2012 at his home in Rockland.[2]
