Samba District is a newly formed district in the Indian administered state of Jammu and Kashmir. Before the formation of this district, the area now under the district was part of Jammu district. Now the district itself covers Samba town and adjoining tehsils namely, Vijaypur and village Supwal, Gahwal. Historically Samba consist of 22 native towns (also known as Mandi), each consist of a separate family. With the majority of the people of Samba are Rajputs mainly Sambyals and because of this reason the main focus of the people of Samba is to Join Defence Forces, i.e., Indian Army, Indian Airforce, Indian Navy, Border Security Forces, ITBP, CRPF, IRF, and many more. The district is separated from the Jammu district by "Purmandal Bridge". Muslims make up just under 6% of total population according to 2001 India census.Samba town is situated on the stream Basantar.

Administration

Samba district consists of four blocks: Samba, Vijaypur, Purmandal, and Ghagwal.[1] Each block consists of a number of GREF panchayats. The biggest village is Rajpura.

Name Origin

Samba gets its name from Samba, son of Hindu God Lord Krishna & Jambavati. Samba was very handsome, dearest and notorious son of Krishna. Samba did many unbearable things which led the whole Yadu dynasty to its end.Krishna wanted a son. After getting advice from a sage, He entered into seclusion, put ashes all over his body and clothed himself in tree bark. For years and years he prays for a glimpse of Shiva to ask him a boon. After some years both Parvati and Shiva appeared. Krishna told Shiva that only He could fulfil His desire. "I want a son exactly like you". Shiva granted Krishna the boon. After some time Krishna's wife Jambavati gave a birth to a baby, they named him Samba.[1] Samba is another name of Shiva.Krishna wanted his son to be exactly like Shiva. Shiva's main function is to destroy creation. For his son to be like Shiva meant that the boy would be the cause of the destruction of his entire race. This was what Krishna precisely wanted because the Yadus could not be defeated by anybody. Immortality for humans is out of question therefore at the end of the Yuga the Yadus would destroy each other. Samba played an instrumental role in this.[1]. Lakshmana, who was the daughter of Duryodhana had come of age. Her father arranged her swayamvara and many princes came to win her hand. Samba had heard of Lakshmana and wanted to marry her, though she was not inclined to him. He goes to her swayamvara and abducts her forcefully. He defeats the Kuru maharathi's who pursue him but is finally caught. He is arrested by the Kuru elders and thrown in prison. Lakshmana's swayamvara is re-arranged but no other prince is willing to marry her as a woman abducted by another man belongs to that man. Actually they were afraid of the Yadava's who may attack them on Samba's behalf. Balarama, who is fond of his notorious nephew goes to Hastinapur to bail him out. The Kurus insult Balarama who becomes enraged and starts smashing up the palace. Duryodhana apologizes for their conduct. Balarama is pacified and orders the Kurus to free Samba. Duryodhana then affectionately marries his daughter off to Samba and the marriage is celebrated in pomp and show.[2][3] This is not recorded in Mahabharata so authenticity of this story is doubted .

Politics

Samba District has two assembly constituencies: Samba (reserved for scheduled castes (SC)) and Vijaypur.[2] Both the assembly constituencies are part of Jammu (Lok Sabha constituency).[3]
