Sam Waley-Cohen
Sam Bernard Waley-Cohen[1] (born 15 April 1982) is an English National Hunt amateur jockey and businessman.
Personal life
Waley-Cohen is the son of Felicity Ann (Samuel) and businessman, racehorse breeder and trainer Robert Waley-Cohen, nephew of the theatre owner and producer Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen Bt. and grandson of Lord Mayor of London, Bernard Waley-Cohen. His maternal grandfather was Marcus Samuel, 3rd Viscount Bearsted the founder of Shell Oil.
He was educated at the Dragon School in Oxford, St Edward's School (also in Oxford), and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where he was awarded the Simon Gray Politics Prize.
Waley-Cohen married Annabel Ballin in 2012.[2]
Horse racing
Waley-Cohen was reported in the sports' pages in 2007[citation needed] when he came 5th on his father's horse Liberthine in the Grand National. He won the delayed 2010 King George VI Chase in January 2011 on Long Run, preventing Kauto Star from winning the race for a record fifth consecutive year.[3] Defeat in the 2012 King George VI to Kauto Star was reversed in 2013 when Long Run and Sam subsequently regained the crown.
In 2011, Sam Waley-Cohen also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup chase on his father's horse Long Run.[4][5] He is the first amateur jockey in 30 years to win the race. In the 2012 and 2013 runnings they finished third to Synchronised and Burton Port respectively.'[6]
Over the Grand National course he has an enviable record. He came second in the 2011 Grand National on Oscar Time,[5] and fourth in the 2013 Grand National again on Oscar Time. With four wins at the Cheltenham Festival and three wins over the Grand National course, amongst a host of other big name wins, Waley-Cohen is regarded by some as the highest achieving amateur jockey of all time.
Business interests
He started his career at Louis Dreyfus Trading Ltd in London - spending time with the successful sugar trading division.[7] Waley-Cohen has also built up the Portman Healthcare chain of dental practices since he started the business in 2009. By March 2011 the business had grown to eight dental practices employing 170 staff[4] and by 2013 it has grown to 15 dental practices.[8] His business activities saw him nomianted as Spears young entrepreneur of the year in 2011[9]
Charity links
Waley-Cohen is a Celebrity Ambassador for The Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT) and was famously pictured with Katherine Middleton at the Roller Disco he organised to raise money for a ward in memory of his brother. When Prince Williams future wife fell over on her skates the pictures made news world wide. He is also a trustee of the injured jockey fund, and founder of the TAWC Fund.[10]
Royal Matchmaker
Sam again hit the press in 2011 when he was credited with being the matchmaker who brought the Duke and Duchess back together following their earlier split.
