Samuel R. LeCure (born May 4, 1984) is an American professional baseball relief pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball. He attended Helias High School in Jefferson City and the University of Texas.[1]
College career
In 16 games, including six starts, with the University of Texas in 2003, he went 5-0 with a 3.74 ERA. He went 9-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 24 games, with 23 starts, in 2004
Draft
He was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies out of high school in the 45th round of the 2002 amateur draft but did not sign. He was then drafted and signed by the Reds in the fourth round of the 2005 amateur draft.[2]
Minor league career
LeCure began his minor league career in 2005 with the Billings Mustangs, going 5-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 13 games (six starts). In 411⁄3 innings, he posted 44 strikeouts.
For the Sarasota Reds in 2006, he went 7-12 with a 3.43 ERA in 27 starts. In 2007, he started one game for the Sarasota Reds and spent the rest of the season with the Chattanooga Lookouts, going a combined 8-5 with a 4.07 ERA in 22 starts.
He repeated AA-ball in 2008 with Chattanooga, going 9-7 with a 3.42 ERA in 27 starts. LeCure spent the entire 2009 season pitching for AAA Louisville Bats, going 10-8 with a 4.46 ERA in 25 starts.[3]
Major league career
LeCure was called up to Cincinnati Reds on May 26, 2010, temporarily replacing an injured Homer Bailey on the roster.[4] LeCure made his major league debut in a start for the Reds on Friday, May 28, 2010 against the Houston Astros.[4] LeCure pitched six innings, gave up two runs and six hits with four walks while striking out five batters. He was also the beneficiary of the Reds' offense producing fifteen runs on nineteen hits. LeCure ended his rookie season at a 2-5 record with a 4.50 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 48 innings.
In 2011, LeCure pitched 77 and 2/3 innings, with a 3.71 earned run average and 73 Ks plus a 2-1 win/loss. He followed up with a 3.14 ERA in 2012, punching out 61 in 48 games with 3 wins and 3 losses. That year, he also yielded 2 hits (no runs) in the three postseason games he appeared in - a losing effort against the Giants, the eventual World Series Champions.
2013 saw the righty put up a career-best 2.66 ERA in 63 games (61 IP), winning 2 out of 3 decisions and striking out 66.
