Salterbeck is a council housing estate on the south side of Workington, built during the 1930s on farmland for steelworkers and their families relocating to the area. 70% is now owned by Impact Housing Association and 30% privately owned. It has a population of about 5,000.

Salterbeck is bordered by Westfield and Mossbay to the north, and Harrington to the south. The east of Salterbeck is where most of the ex-council houses have been bought and is now largely a private residential area. Also eastern Salterbeck is one of the most popular places to live in Workington as house prices there are high.

Salterbeck ACE is a successful community business run as a social enterprise. It manages the Oval Centre which has rooms for hire, a bar, cafe and gym. ACE also runs landscaping and decorating teams which have corporate contracts as well as with private individuals.

To the centre of Salterbeck is a big field which is known to the locals as "the back field". It has rugby and football pitches where the local amateur rugby league team Salterbeck Storm and Salterbeck FC, Salterbeck Utd and the Oval FC play.
