Salooni[1] (Hindi: सलूणी) is the tehsil headquarters and Sub-Division in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It contains a combined office building,SDM office, government senior secondary school, degree college, community health centre and all other important government offices. Salooni falls under Dalhousie as its legislative constituency and Kangra as its parliamentary constituency. It has a population of about 1800 and lies at a height of 1764 meters. The main entrance to the village contains a series of shops and the small ground of the ancient temple of Kali Mata, which has been restored.

Physical features

A smaller and more or less continuous range about 2,000 meters high runs south of the snowy ranges, Salooni, at a height of 1764 meters and 56 km from Chamba, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the snow-covered hills and peaks. Situated at the top of a ridge and opening into the Bhandal Valley, this scenic spot of great beauty leads also to Bhaderwah. Salooni has also been featured in many Bollywood movies[2] such as Badhaai Ho Badhaai, Vinashak – Destroyer and Dor.

Tourist sites

  • The Gamgul Siahbehi Wildlife Sanctuary lies 20 km from Salooni with musk deer, barking deer, snow leopards, Himalayas tahr, pheasants, rabbits and large species of fauna and colourful birds. It lies at an average height of 1800 to 2800m. It has an area of 70 square meters.
  • Baira Siul is a hydropower project[3] on the riverbank in Surgani. It is the first project[4] of the NHPC in India and produces 180 megawatts of electricity.
  • Taleru boating point is the only boating spot in the locality. Boating is done on the lake formed by Chamera Dam.
  • Bhalei Mata Temple, situated 28 km from Salooni toward Dalhousie, is an ancient temple with a portrait of Kali Mata. It also is surrounded by panoramic views.

Rest house

The Salooni rest house dates from the early 1900s; it is beautifully built, covered with deodar trees. Other nearby rest houses are in Kihar, Sundala, Dhargala and Diur.[5]

Climate

There is snowfall[6] between December and March, when temperatures fall to -15C. Summer temperatures reach a maximum of 28C. Annual rainfall is 1490 mm.

Transport

Salooni is well connected to Chamba by road. It also has a helipad.
