Saint Dominic Academy (SDA) is a four-year private high school for girls in grades nine through twelve, located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Located within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, the school is administered by the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, New Jersey. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Secondary Schools since 1991.[2]

Statistics

As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 451 students and 33.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.3:1.[1]

History

The school was founded in 1878 by a community of nuns from New York, with the objective to educate children of immigrants, primarily German. On March 7, 1942, SDA moved to its present location on Kennedy Boulevard. In 1994, a new wing was open with new computer labs, science and language labs.[3] The school celebrated its 130th birthday on October 23, 2008. As a celebratory gift to the currently enrolled students and faculty, the school was closed on Friday, October 24, in recognition of the long history of the school.

Saint Dominic Academy has been an IB World School since April 2007, offering students the IB Diploma Programme.[4]

Saint Dominic Academy is a member of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools.[5]

Academics

Graduation requirements

Certain minimum requirements have been established by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and Saint Dominic Academy for graduation. These are expressed in terms of successful completion of specific courses and credits.

Students are required to successfully complete courses in the following areas (numbers refer to years of study):

  • Religious Studies – 4 (Includes 40 hours of Christian Service)
  • English – 4
  • American History – 2
  • Physical Education – 4
  • Health and Driver Education – 4
  • Mathematics – 4
  • Foreign Language – 2
  • Science – 2 (2 lab sciences)
  • World History – 1
  • Electives – 4
  • Art – ¼
  • Music – ¼
  • Computer – ½

Full year major courses earn 5 credits; one-semester courses earn 2.5 credits. Two one-semester courses may substitute for a full year.

The credit for Career Development is satisfied by the use of an infusion method in all subject areas, an annual career day and attendance at a variety of career fairs.

A full year failure must be made up in a sixty hour summer session before the student may return to Saint Dominic Academy in the fall. The administration reserves the right to discontinue the enrollment of any student who fails two or more courses in a year. The decision whether any student will be dismissed by reason of academic failure shall be at the discretion of the administration.[6]

IB courses

The International Baccalaureate is a two-year program that takes place during the Junior and Senior years. The following courses are available:

Students may take either the entire IB Diploma Program or separate classes in the Certificate Program, with required tests administered before the completion of both programs.[6]

Physical education

Physical education courses are conducted at Saint Peter's College located just a few blocks away from the high school. Students avail themselves of all of the College's gym/athletic facilities including a state-of-the-art fitness center, basketball and tennis courts, jogging track, and Olympic-size swimming pool.

Athletics

Saint Dominic Academy competes in the Hudson County Interscholastic League, which includes private and parochial high schools in Hudson County and operates under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.[7][8]

SDA hosts a range of after-school clubs. These clubs consist of a moderator and an executive board made up of seniors (normally) and are elected by the fellow members of that club. It is encouraged to join as many clubs as possible by the school. Some of the clubs that are run are:

Uniforms

It is mandatory, unless announced, that the students wear a school uniform. The school has two uniforms, one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter. Some components of the uniform can be worn regardless of the season. The seniors have a slightly altered uniform. The students must also wear brown shoes.

The Spring and Winter uniform consists of (For all students):

  • A khaki skirt
  • Navy blue knee high socks
  • Navy Blue knit skirt
  • All students have the option to wear khaki or navy blue slacks throughout the year

Seniors

Seniors can wear a white or navy blue polo shirt for Spring. In the Winter, they may continue wearing the polos, but they have the choice to wear a white turtleneck. The Seniors also wear a navy blue Varsity sweater.They are also distinguished by their white knee high socks.

Underclasswomen

Freshmen to Juniors must wear a light blue Oxford shirt. In the Winter, they must wear a white Oxford shirt. During formal occasions, underclassmen must wear a formal blazer.

Gym uniforms

The gym uniform consists of a blue t-shirt, and mesh shorts or cotton sweatpants. This must be worn at all gym classes.
