Sainik School, Tilaiya
Sainik School, Tilaiya, Jharkhand, India, prepares boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the Defence Services and those who follow other paths, for responsible positions in other walks of life.
The laying of the foundation stone of Sainik School was on 16 Sept 1963. The school was created by the efforts of the then Union Defence Minister, Late V K Krishna Menon, the Chief Minister from Bihar Late K B Sahay and scholar Principal Lt Col LEG Smith. Today it is top ranking nursery to the NDA.
Located near Tilaiya dam in the district of Koderma, Sainik School Tilaiya is 18 km away from the nearest rail head – Koderma on the Howrah – Delhi chord line nearer to Gaya. The Chhotanagpur Plateau and Tilaiya provide a backdrop to the school.

Objectives
To remove regional imbalance in the officer cadre of the Defence Services. To develop qualities of body, mind and character which will enable the young boys of today to become good and useful citizens of tomorrow and excel in all walks of life. To bring public school education within the reach of common man's child.
Achievement
On 16 September 1963 the foundation stone of Sainik School Tilaiya was laid. Since then, SST has been pursuing its goal of sending cadets of the Defence Forces through the NDA. Of the 600 officers that the school has sent to the NDA, some have reached the ranks of Brigadiers and Major General. Major General S.P. Sinha was the first Tilaiyan to reach the rank of Major General while Lieutenant General Gyan Bhushan,General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Jaipur-based South Western Command of the Indian Army,is the tilaiyan at the highest position in the Armed Forces.
Curriculum
The academic instruction imparted at the school prepares students for the following examinations:-
- All India Secondary School Examination (Class - X),
- All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class - XII) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi under the 10+2 pattern of school education,
- Union Public Service Commission Examination for admission to the National Defence Academy and other Defence Academies,
- Scholarship holders take the NDA Entrance Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission during the +2 stage after passing Class XI. Since there is an emphasis on Science Stream in the NDA curriculum, Sainik Schools cater only to the science stream subjects in Classes XI and XII.
Other activities include co-curricular activities and Socially Useful Productive Work, sports and NCC training.

Arts and Crafts
The Department of Fine Art Head of Department is Mr. Mrinal Chakraborty, since October 1986.. Students are exposed to drawing and art competitions, such as CBSE National Art Competition, the National Art Competition organized by the Ministry of Forest and Environment, and the Cartoon Competition on Science Fiction. The school participated in "Sports in Imagination" International Art Competition organized by the Beijing Olympics 2008. Some students have opted for a career through NIFT, NID and Animation courses.
Biology
Head of Department: The department has Mr. A K Majumdar, Senior Master who was also a National Awardee, Mr. A N Nanda, HoD Biology and Mr. N Upadhayay as the members of the department.
The department has a collection of specimens for study - human embryos at development stages, foetus of cow, potter's hive, human skeleton, varieties of local snakes like krait, rat snake, viper, and python.
Its teaching aids include charts, museum specimens, models, and transparencies for an overhead projector.
The department is looking forward to the cadets joining in the field of medicine including AFMC (Pune) and Biotechnology as well.
Chemistry
The Chemistry department consists of four members. In addition to the teaching staff a laboratory assistant manages the day to day running of the laboratory schedule. The department caters to general science up to class VIII and Chemistry from IXth onwards.
A laboratory is used for demonstration for junior classes and for practicals at the senior level. The chemistry club functions every Friday afternoon.
Besides normal teaching of chemistry, the faculty involves itself in the preparation of cadets for UPSC, NTSE and exhibitions.
Computer Science
The department is headed by Mr. M. Pathak who joined in July 2003. along with two teachers - Mr. Rajesh Kumar and Mr P K Jha. Each student gets an individual computer during practical, with software such as Eureka Educational Software for Science Subject from Class sixth to 12 and JIL Bharat Vidya software for social science uoto class – X and Practical of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
English
Head of Department: Mr M P Menon, joined December 1981.
The department has six staff members. The convention of conversing in English is scrupulously followed without exception. It is an English speaking zone. The language lab has positions for 40 students.
Mathematics
Heads of Department Mr A Saha. The department comprises seven teachers including Mr.D.N Pandey, Mr.Pratik Pandey, Mr.S.Akhtar, and Mr.J.K Sinha. In addition to preparation for CBSE Board Examination, the department imparts training for UPSE (NDA/NA Entrance) test (written part), National Talent Search Examination and Mathematic Olympiad.
Physics
Head of Department: Mr Dhananjay Kumar
The Department of Physics was established in 1963 along with founding of the school by late Mr J L Das, Physics teacher who was later decorated with "National Award" as an outstanding teacher of Physics.
The lab can accommodate 40 students at any given time.
The department comprises four teachers, a lab assistant and a lab attendant. In addition to normal preparation for CBSE Board Examination, the department imparts training for UPSC (NDA/NA) entrance test (written part), National Talent Search Examination and Science Olympiad.
Hindi
The Hindi Department of SST is headed by Dr (Mrs) S K Ambastha.

Social Science
Head of Department: Anjani Kumar.
It comprises five subjects headed by Mr. Anjani Kumar. Three of them specialize in Geography and two in History. The faculty members do handle Civics, Economics and Disaster Management classes apart from their subjects.
Some of the students have proved their mettle by scoring centurion in Social Science in Xth Board for the last three years.
Teachers prepare the boys for the UPSC exam every year.
