Sai Maa (born 1953) also known as Her Holiness Sai Maa (Mataji) or Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi is a guru and leader of a large community of followers, the head of the Humanity In Unity organization based in Boulder, Colorado, and an ashram based in Crestone, Colorado.[1] She in turn was a follower of Sathya Sai Baba.
Biography
Sai Maa was born to Indian parentage on the island of Mauritius on 2 August 1953. She was raised Hindu.[2] In her youth, Mataji was sent to study at Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s Ashram in Puttaparthy, India. Mataji lived in France for many years where she studied psychology, cranial osteopathy, literature and languages. She also spent time in the US and Canada studying intuitive medicine and energy healing. Returning to India frequently to deepen Her studies in the practice and philosophy of Yoga, Mataji became certified in Shivananda Yoga, Kriya Yoga and Integral Yoga. Mataji created and conducted meditation and self-development workshops and programs for the terminally ill in the US and Canada. She ran a private practice in France, offering personal therapy and relationship counseling. Mataji also served for several years as a member of the City Council of Bordeaux, France. During this time, Mataji married and had two children. She is divorced and living in Crestone, Colorado.[3]
Organizations
In 2000 Sai Maa formed Humanity In Unity, based in Boulder, Colorado, USA. Sai Maa established the Temple of Consciousness Ashram in Crestone, Colorado in 2004. An Ashram and health center was established in Nandi Hills in Southern India near Bangalore, together with local centers throughout the US, and in other countries including Canada, France, Ireland, England, Belgium, Australia and Japan.
In 2006 Sai Maa founded the Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust, a registered Indian charity, for the purpose of conducting humanitarian and educational work in India. In 2009, property was purchased at the Harishchandra Ghat in Varanasi to serve as an Ashram and National Headquarters for the Trust, and construction of the Ashram began in November 2010.[citation needed] Sai Maa currently has a small Ashram in Vrindavan where plans are underway for purchasing additional land to establish an Ayurvedic health center, Vishnu temple and Ashram. Sai Maa also has 33 acres of land in Mirzapur outside Varanasi, gifted by Sri Satuwa Baba Maharaji, where plans are being made for the establishment of a degree college.
