Saboten Con is an American anime convention held in Phoenix, Arizona and organized by Monkey Paw Entertainment. The convention is held on labor day weekend and lasts for 3 days (Sat-Mon). It is currently hosted at the Renaissance Phoenix Glendale Hotel & Spa. Saboten Con is the largest anime convention in Arizona with attendance reaching 3,432[1] for the 2012 event.
Saboten Con gains its name by combining the Japanese name for Cactus "Saboten" and adding the word "con" for convention at the end. The cactus helps reference the conventions roots in Arizona which is home to many species of cactus.
Saboten Con was awarded the "Best Anime Convention - 2010" by the Phoenix New Times, which recognized its growth in Arizona as well as it ability to bring in big named guests from the Anime and Manga industries.[2]
Programming
Saboten Con features events including concerts, artist's alley, a masquerade, J-Fashion Show, Lolita Tea Party, AMV contest, swap meet("Otaku Closet"), karaoke, video gaming, table top gaming, raves("SaboLight" and "SaboDark"). There is also a wide variety of panles from the Anime, Manga, Gaming, and Japanese Culture genres.
