The S5 is a regional railway line of the S-Bahn Zürich on the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV), Zürich transportation network, and is one of the network's lines connecting the cantons of Zürich, St. Gallen and Schwyz.

Route

The line runs from the northwest of the canton of Zürich either from Niederweningen or Rafz and heads for Pfäffikon SZ, stopping by Zürich Hauptbahnhof and Zürich Stadelhofen.

Between Stadelhofen and Uster – i.e. Stettbach, Dübendorf, Schwerzenbach and Nänikon-Greifensee – are no stops; Aathal-Seegräben is also not a regular stop.

The night service (SN5) on the S5 line, operating on weekends after midnight, runs between Bülach and Rapperswil.

Most services are operated by Re 450 class locomotives pushing or pulling double-deck passenger carriages. Service is also provided by RABe 511 units, especially on weekends.

Scheduling

The train frequency is usually 30 minutes and the trip takes 78 (via Niederweningen) or 84 minutes (via Rafz): Rafz and Niederweningen alternate every hour.
