The Zürich S-Bahn network.

The S21 is a regional railway line of the S-Bahn Zürich on the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV), Zürich transportation network, and is one of the network's lines connecting the cantons of Zürich and Zug. Unlike most of the Zürich S-Bahn lines, it is a radial route.

Route

The line runs from Zug and heads for Zürich Hauptbahnhof, stopping by Thalwil. Apart from rush-hour time, it runs only between Zug and Thalwil.

Stations

Sihlbrugg station between Baar and Horgen was closed permanently in 2012.

Rolling stock

Most services are operated by Re 450 class locomotives pushing or pulling double-deck passenger carriages. For the morning rush hour, a single-deck train powered by two RBe 540 cars as well as a double-deck RABe 514 EMU are also in service. On weekends, service is usually provided using a Stadler FLIRT unit.

Scheduling

Base service is run between Zug and Thalwil on a 60-minute frequency using a single trainset, with the trip taking 19 minutes. During rush hours, two additional trainsets are brought onto the line to provide 30-minute frequency for the 35-minute trip between Zürich HB and Zug.
