Ryosuke Yamada (山田 涼介 Yamada Ryōsuke, born May 9, 1993) is a Japanese actor, singer, dancer, songwriter, and a member of two Japanese boy bands, Hey! Say! JUMP and NYC.[1] He is under the management of Johnny & Associates.

Yamada came to prominence as a teen idol in 2007 following his role in the Japanese television series Tantei Gakuen Q. After launching his music career in 2007 as a member of boy band Hey! Say! JUMP, he released his number one debut solo single, "Mystery Virgin" in 2013. The fact that Yamada was in his teens at the time the single reached number one helped the singer set several records in the Japanese music industry and Yamada achieved wide fame as a solo artist. He became the first teenage male artist in thirty three years to have a number one debut single as well as being one of the only two artists in history to achieve this milestone.[2] He is also the one and only male artist born in the Heisei period with a number one single, as of 2013.

Early life

Ryosuke Yamada was born on May 9, 1993, in Kanagawa Prefecture and was raised in Tokyo, Japan.[3] He has two siblings, an older sister and a younger sister.[citation needed]

Career

2004-05: Career beginnings

Yamada began his career after entering Johnny and Associates at the age of 10. His mother, who was a fan of KinKi Kids, sent an application for an audition which recruited trainees for future male idols.[3] The audition took place during the summer of 2004 and was aired in a segment of a Japanese television program, Ya-Ya-yah. Yamada made his first television appearance in August.

He began working as a backup dancer for Tackey & Tsubasa, NEWS, Kanjani8, and KAT-TUN and appeared regularly on The Shounen Club from autumn 2004.

For the first two years, he struggled to stand out among the other trainees. He was often positioned at the back row, with over fifty other backup dancers in front of him. In 2005, trainees who auditioned with him furthered their success, positioned in the front row and selected to be one of the members of J.J.Express, a boy band consisting nine members. Yamada says he was devastated after hearing he wasn’t chosen as a member and thought of leaving Johnny & Associates. With encouragement from his mother and other trainees, he decided to stay.

In fall 2005, Yamada was selected to be one of the main backup dancers for a temporary two-man group, Shuji and Akira. This was the first time for him to dance in the front row, making this a turning point for him in his career. His performance led him to be one of the main dancers among the trainees for the next two years, until he made his debut in 2007.

2006-07: Tantei Gakuen Q and Hey! Say! JUMP

Following his success as a dancer, he began acting. In 2006, he made his acting debut in a 2-hour television drama episode, Tantei Gakuen Q SP , as Ryu Amakusa.

In April 2007, he was selected to be a member of a temporary boy band, Hey! Say! 7.[4] He made his CD debut on August 1, 2007, with a #1 single “Hey!Say!”.[4] The band was created by Johnny Kitagawa and was stated that it will be active for 6 months until September 2007.

From July 2007, a 3-month series of Tantei Gakuen Q was launched and Yamada played Ryu Amakusa again as he did in the prequel. The series was a major success, catching the attention of many young girls and quickly established Yamada as a teen idol.

In September 2007, the temporary boy band, Hey!Say!7 broke up. Johnny & Associates announced that a new boy band, Hey! Say! JUMP, would be launched. Yamada was selected as one of the ten members. He debuted on November 14, 2007 with a number one single "Ultra Music Power".[5]

2008-09: Acting and NYC boys

In 2008, Yamada furthered his acting career. From January to March 2008, he starred in a 3-month long television drama series, One-Pound Gospel with Kazuya Kamenashi. On April 12, he played a main role in a 2-hour drama episode, Sensei wa Erai, as Hayato Gunsho.

On June 14, he played the main role in Furuhata Chuugakusei, the sequel to Furuhata Ninzaburo, a famous Japanese drama series aired since 1994. Writer Koki Mitani had been planning a sequel for almost a decade but failed to launch one because he was unable to find an ideal teen actor who could play Ninzaburo Furuhata. Mitani spotted Yamada in One-Pound Gospel, in which his wife starred in and instantly contacted Johnny & Associates to offer Yamada the role.

From October to December 2008, he played the main role, Koichi Takasugi, in a 3-month long television drama series, Scrap Teacher: Kyoushi Saisei, along with three band members.

In June 2009, it was announced that Yamada will be working as the lead singer of temporary boy band, NYC boys.[6] The band debuted with a number one single, "NYC". On December 31, 2009, the band appeared on Kohaku Uta Gassen.[7]

In the summer of 2009, Yamada returned to acting and starred in Niini no koto Wasurenaide, a 2-hour television drama episode aired as a segment of an annual television show, 24 Hour Television. On October 3, 2009, he played the main role in Hidarime Tantei Eye.

2010-12: NYC, The Smurfs, Perfect Son and Johnnys’ World

From January 2010, Hidarime Tantei EYE became a 3-month long television series and Yamada once again played the main role.[8] His band mate Yuma Nakayama guest starred in the first two episodes. Hey! Say! JUMP's fifth single "Hitomi no Screen" was used as the theme song for the series.

In March 2010, it was announced that Yamada and two other leading members of NYC boys will form a new boy band called NYC, leaving behind the remaining four members.[9] NYC released a number one single "Yūki 100%" on April 7, 2010.[9] From this point on, Yamada began performing as the lead singer of two boy bands, Hey! Say! JUMP and NYC.

In September 2011, he played the voice of Clumsy in the Japanese-dubbed version of the film The Smurfs.[10] Hey! Say! JUMP's eighth single, “Magic Power”, was used as the theme song for the film.

In 2012, Yamada returned to acting for the first time in two years. He played the main role in Yamada Akiyoshi Monogatari, which was aired on January 2.[11] It was his first time to star in a jidaigeki. From January to March, he starred in a 3-month long television series, Perfect Son, with actress Kyoka Suzuki.[12] Hey! Say! JUMP’s 9th single "SUPER DELICATE" was used as the theme song for the series.

From November 2012 to January 2013, he played the lead role in a musical, Johnnys’ World.[13] During the three months, a total of 103 shows were performed at the Imperial Garden Theatre. The launch of Yamada’s solo work was announced during the first week of the opening. This announcement shocked and worried many fans, evoking the possibility of his departure from Hey! Say! JUMP and NYC. Yamada denied the rumor and stated that he will continue working as a member of the two bands while working on his solo career.

2013-present: Mystery Virgin and Kindaichi Case Files

On January 9, 2013, he made his solo debut with a number one single "Mystery Virgin".[14] The fact that Yamada was in his teens at the time when the single reached number one helped him set several new records in the Japanese music industry. The single debuted at number one in its debut week on the Oricon chart, making him the first teenage male artist in thirty three years to have a number one debut single as well as being one of the only two artists in history to achieve this milestone.[2] He is currently the one and only male artist born in the Heisei period to have a number one single. In Japan, although many teen boy bands frequently top the charts, the industry was lacking young male solo artists for over two decades and this is said to be another factor that contributed to his successful solo debut.

On January 12, he starred in a two-hour television drama, Kinda'ichi Shōnen no Jikenbo.[15] He played the main role as Hajime Kindaichi. The show was created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Japanese broadcasting company, NTV.[16] Yamada’s “Mystery Virgin” was used as the theme song for the show. It was later revealed that Shin Kibayashi, writer of the Kindaichi series and Tantei Gakuen Q had visioned creating a new Kindaichi series with Yamada as Hajime Kindaichi for almost five years. They met on set while filming Tantei Gakuen Q in 2006 and 2007. After filming the show, Kibayashi asked Yamada in person if he could play the role of Kindaichi in the future, for Yamada was only 14-years-old at the time, too young to play the role of a high school student.[17]
