Ryan McLaughlin (born 30 September 1994) is a Northern Irish footballer who plays as a defender for Liverpool.

Personal life

Ryan's older brother, Conor, is also a footballer.

Club career

Liverpool signed 16-year old Ryan McLaughlin in the summer of 2011 from Glenavon F.C. on a three-year deal.[1] He started out in Liverpool's Under-18 squad in the 2011-12 season, making 14 appearances. He then made his way into the Reserve team making twelve appearances, eight of which were in the NextGen Series.

In July 2012, McLaughlin was one of a number of youngsters selected to travel with the senior squad on the team's pre-season tour of the USA. He made his unofficial senior début against A.S. Roma where he played an impressive first half performance before being replaced in the second half. He was then given a squad number by new manager Brendan Rodgers for the 2012-13 season.

On 9 January 2014, McLaughlin was signed by Football League Championship side Barnsley F.C. on a 28 day loan deal and was given squad number 27.[2] He made his club and senior career debut on 18 January against Blackpool in the Championship. On 29 January 2014 it was announced that McLaughlin sustained an injury that will keep him out for four weeks.[3] Two days later his loan was extended until the end of the season.[4]

International career

McLaughlin has represented Northern Ireland at Under-16, Under-17 and currently at Under-19 and Under-21 level. He was called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad for a friendly against Finland on 15 August 2012 but was forced to withdraw due to a hip injury.[5]
