Ryan Anthony Dickson (born 14 December 1986) is an English footballer who plays as a left back for Colchester United. He has also represented Plymouth Argyle, Brentford and Southampton. He has also played on-loan for Torquay United, Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient and Bradford City.

Career

Plymouth Argyle

Born in Saltash, Dickson is a product of the Plymouth Argyle youth system, turning professional in May 2004. He made his league debut on 16 October 2004, as a second-half substitute for David Worrell in a 2–1 home defeat to Wigan Athletic.[4]

He struggled with injury and in August 2006, trained with Scottish Premier League club Motherwell and played once in a friendly against an American college side,[5] with a view to a loan move, but the deal fell through due to his lack of first team experience.

He joined Torquay United on loan in January 2007 until the end of the season, his Plymouth manager Ian Holloway explaining that the loan spell would allow Dickson to increase his fitness before returning to Plymouth's squad for the following season.[6] He made his Torquay debut on 13 January, playing in a 2–2 draw at home to Bury. Dickson scored once in three games for Torquay before returning to Argyle with a hernia injury.[7] However, on 22 March 2007, Dickson returned to Torquay on loan until the end of the season.

Brentford

Dickson joined Brentford on loan on 16 November 2007, initially for one month.[8] Brentford then signed Dickson on a permanent deal on 11 January 2008,[9] beating off competition from Darlington and Torquay United. On 2 September 2008, Dickson scored the winning penalty in a shoot-out against Yeovil Town, sending Brentford into the second round of the Football League Trophy.[10]

Southampton

On 10 June 2010, it was reported that Dickson had signed a deal to join League One rivals Southampton, with the transfer fee to be agreed at a tribunal.[11] At the tribunal, the fee was set at £125,000 with a further £25,000 for every ten appearances Dickson made for Southampton on 10, 20, 30 and 40 appearances. There would also be a £25,000 fee due if Southampton won promotion within three years together with a 20 percent sell-on clause.[12] His first goal for the club came away at former club Plymouth Argyle, a 3–1 victory which saw the hosts relegated and the Saints win promotion to the Championship.[13]

Having struggled to break into the first team after Southampton's promotion to the Championship, on 6 January 2012 Dickson was sent out on loan to League One side Yeovil Town for an initial month,[14] and on 21 January, scored his first goal in a 3–2 loss to Bury. Dickson returned to Southampton after his one month loan expired.[15]

Dickson signed on emergency loan for Leyton Orient on 9 February 2012, until the end of the season[16] where he made nine appearances.[2] The following season, on 11 January 2013, Dickson joined Bradford City on loan until the end of the season.[17] He scored his first goal for the club on 2 February 2013, a 2–2 draw away to Fleetwood Town.[18]

After 23 league appearances, Dickson was released by Southampton on 4 June 2013.[19]

Colchester United

Following an unsuccessful trial spell with former club Plymouth Argyle,[20] Dickson joined Colchester United on trial and signed a one-year contract with the club on 26 July 2013.[21] He made his debut for Colchester in the opening game of the 2013–14 season, a 1–0 win at Gillingham on 3 August.[22]
