Ruslan Kurbanov (lezg. Къурбанрин Руслан) – a Russian political expert, social activist and columnist, director of the Fund for support of humanitarian initiatives “Altair”, senior fellow at Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Born October 26, 1976 in South-Dagestanian village Kurakh, an ethnic Lezgi.

Education and Scientific activities

Ruslan Kurbanov has gain a specialist Diploma in Economics at the Dagestan State University. In 2004 earned PhD degree in Politics at the Saint Petersburg State University.[1] In 2002 – 2005 held a position as a head of department of conflicts and informational security at the Center of strategic researches and political technologies in the Republic of Dagestan. In 2006 held lectures at the Abou-Nour University in Damascus. Since 2007 - senior fellow at Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.Author of monographs and research articles on Islam, social and legal aspects of Muslim community and its integration in non-Muslim countries.[2]

Professional activities

In 2003 held a position of Editor-in-chief of daily news program “Dagestan News” on State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company “Dagestan”. In 2003-2005 he was an author and linkman of historical TV show “Seven winds”.[3] In 2008-2009 R. Kurbanov was a head of department “World beyond the West” of Foundation for Effective Politics. At the same time he was Editor-in-chief of “The Senate” program of the Russian Federation Council.[4] In 2011-2012 worked as Editor-in-chief of "Caucasian Politics" analytical portal. Since 2012 – a director of the Fund for support of humanitarian initiatives “Altair”.[5][6]

Public activities

Since 2003 – a head of Young Political Researches School at the Regional Center of Ethnopolitical Researches of the Dagestan scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 2004 – a head of socio-cultural movement “Young Republic”. Since 2006 – a member of Research committee on human rights at Russian Association of Political Science. Since 2007 – Co-Chairman of Russian Congress of Caucasian Nations.[7] In 2009-2012 R. Kurbanov held a position as a head of Experts Council of Working Group for development public dialog and institutes of civil society at the Russian Civic Chamber.[8] In 2011 was included in the list of candidates to Russian State Duma from Dagestani regional public organization “Dagestan civil union” along with other candidates like Ramazan Abdulatipov, Sergey Reshulsky etc. Since 2010 – a head of Experts Council commission for cooperation with Mass Media at Russian muftis Council Since 2013 – Vice-President of Federal Lezgin National Cultural Autonomy.[9]
