Shows like "Swing This", "Romeo and Juliet", "RENT", "Les Miserables", and other great productions have given the Rowlett Eagle Theater Company state and national recognition. RHS Theater Company's "Swing This" got the "Best Show" award at the Patty Granville awards, a district theater competition. On December 4, 2008; the drama team of Rowlett High School did a production of the Broadway musical Rent. The faculty said that they were doing an edited version, making it more "PG-13" than "R" rated. However, the students' parents protested the high school production amid concerns that the student players would be involved in same sex activity, and drugs.[10] The controversy was referenced in the Glee episode, The Rocky Horror Glee Show.[citation needed] For their 2013 production of "Les Miserables", RETC received a nomination for Best Musical in the Dallas Summer Musical Awards, as well as Best Actor (Dane Sowers) and best cameo (Preston Hart). On top of this, the cast also had the privilege of meeting famous Broadway actor Ramin Karimloo, who played many notable roles such as The Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and Enjolras in Les Miserables, and the privilege of performing an excerpt from Master of the House on Good Morning Texas on April 10, 2013.
