The Rostock S-Bahn (German: S-Bahn Rostock) is a suburban train in Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which opened in 1970. It has three lines with a total of nearly 60 km (37 mi) in length. The lines from the main station to the port in Warnemünde and Rostock operate within the city limits, a third line runs south into the town Güstrow. It used to be turning trains with double-deck coaches and diesel locomotives.

Multiple unit Class 642 as S3
The lines S1 and S2 are operated with push-pull trains with a Class 143 locomotive and two modernised Bilevel cars of the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR and a newer bilevel cab car. The trains can be extended up to six coaches. The S1 is operated every 15 minutes, the S2 every hour. During the rush hour the S1 operates every 10 minutes.
The line S3 is operated by diesel multiple units of Class 642 or Class 628 as the small multiple unit was sufficient to carry the few passengers on the line. Also, an extension to the ferry terminal, possibly on existing, non-electrified tracks, was discussed, but never implemented.
Future plans
A tram-train network ("Stadtbahn") in the city was discussed, but no related measures were implemented.
Future S-Bahn Rostock network
In December 2012, trains from Rostock to Güstrow via Laage, until then a Regionalbahn line run by Ostseeland Verkehr, will be designated "S3". The previous "S3" to "Seehafen Nord" was to become "S4",[1] but in May 2012 the state's Ministry of Transportation cancelled the planned funding of the line due to its low passenger numbers.[2] All lines shall serve the Rostock-Warnemünde section, resulting in a train at least every 15 minutes there, with usually only one train per hour continuing on each line south or east of Rostock Central Station.
