Rocket Monkeys is a Canadian animated television series that premiered on Teletoon on January 10, 2013.[1] The series was created by Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson and developed by Mark Evestaff and Alex Galatis. Rocket Monkeys is produced in association with Atomic Cartoons Inc. The show premiered in March 4, 2013 on Nickelodeon in the United States, and on 15 April 2013 on Nicktoons in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The show also aired on Nicktoons, also in the United States, for 3 weeks only beginning on April 19, 2013 showing episodes that were aired on Nickelodeon in a marathon from 9pm-12am. On June 4, 2013, Teletoon renewed the show for an additional 26 episodes.[2]
Development for the show started in 2006. The two simian stars, Gus and Wally, were loosely based on Jason and Dan who have been friends since high school. Jason and Dan developed a pitch book and animated motion test, which they showed to Michael Feder. Michael Feder, a partner of Hornet Inc, agreed to help develop Rocket Monkeys, under the Hornet Films label of the company. The show was sold to Warner Bros in the fall of 2007. Warner Bros shut down its original animation division in early 2008. 4Kids Entertainment picked up the project and Rocket Monkeys was green lit for preproduction in the spring of 2008 with Dan and Jason as show runners. In early 2011, 4kids entered chapter 11 bankruptcy and the future of Rocket Monkeys was in limbo. Later in 2011 Breakthrough Entertainment of Canada green lit the series, and Rocket Monkeys went back into production. In early 2012 the series went into full production, with animation being handled by Atomic, in Vancouver. In 2013 the series was made available on internet streaming services such as Hulu Plus, Amazon and iTunes.
