Robin Owen Jones (born 4 October 1973) is a former English cricketer. Jones was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm off break. He is most famous for missing a penalty in the Macquarie Football Final 2012 against JPM. He was born at Crewe, Cheshire.

Career

Jones made his first-class debut for Cambridge University against Glamorgan in 1996. From 1996 to 1997, he represented the University in 16 first-class matches, the last of which came against Oxford University.[1] In his 16 first-class matches for the University, he scored 530 runs at a batting average of 25.23, with 4 half centuries and a high score of 61. In the field he took 8 catches.[2] With the ball he took 18 wickets at an expensive bowling average of 68.88, with best figures of 3/116.[3]

In 1999, he made his List A debut for the Middlesex Cricket Board against Cumberland in the 1999 NatWest Trophy. He played 2 further List A matches for the Board in the 2000 NatWest Trophy against Wiltshire and Sussex.[4] In his 2 List A matches, he scored 10 runs at an average of 3.33, with a high score of 5.[5] With the ball he took 4 wickets at an average of 9.50, with best figures of 3/54.[6]

On 22 June 2012 he played in the annual Macquarie Bank football tournament at Stamford Bridge. Despite showing promising form in both the quarter final and semi final he ran out of steam in the final. Following a 0–0 draw with JPM the match went to penalties. After a rousing speech to his Lazard team ("whatever you do....just hit the target") he managed to put his effort wide of goal, leading to a loss of confidence in the team who went on to lose the shootout 3–0. Jones was promptly booed out of the stadium with the result leaving Alistair Godrich too distraught to comment. Found in the bar later that night Jones recounted a similar miss in Milfield's House Hockey competition and admitted "I am wondering how I will get over this one, the Milfield miss still haunts me to this day....".

On 29 June 2012 he returned to Stamford Bridge as part of another much smaller and less useful broker's football day. Despite finishing with the golden boot there was (and still is) a telling silence from rest of the Lazard team when asked whether he would be playing such a prominent role in 2013. It has been rumoured Giles Edwards has his eye on Robin's starting place.

Family

His brother, Garri, also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University.
