Roberto del Carmen Córdova Carreño (b. Pichilemu, Chile, August 13, 1965)[2] is a Chilean politician. Córdova worked as Councillor of Pichilemu between 2000 and December 2008, and again from May until September 2009,[2] when he became mayor of the city.[1] He was popularly elected mayor of Pichilemu in October 2012.[3]

Early life, studies and work

Roberto Córdova was born on August 13, 1965. He completed his primary studies, partly in Escuela Pueblo de Viudas, and at Escuela Digna Camilo Aguilar, in Pichilemu. He graduated from high school at Liceo Agustín Ross Edwards, also in Pichilemu, in 1983.[2]

From 1986 to 1990 he worked in various forestry, agriculture and construction companies in the Pichilemu area. From 1990 to 1992, he worked in the Escondida mine in Antofagasta, and the San Cristóbal mine in Sierra Gorda as supervisor of the maintenance area.[2]

In 1992 Córdova began working at the Pichilemu town hall (or Municipality) as Administrative Functionary in the Social Department. From 1996 until 2008 he worked in FOSIS (the Solidarity and Social Investment Fund) as Manager, Supervisor and Local Development Agent for the communes of Pichilemu, Litueche, La Estrella, Paredones, Marchigue, and Navidad in the Cardenal Caro Province; and Pumanque, Lolol, Chépica, Peralillo, and Palmilla in the Colchagua Province.[2]

Córdova completed his military service in the Lanceros Regiment in Puerto Natales, Magallanes and Antártica Chilena Region, in 1996.[2]

Subsequently, between 2001 and 2005, Córdova studied Performance Engineering in Public Management at the Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano.[2]

In 2000 Roberto Córdova was elected Councillor of Pichilemu, with 938 (14.73%) from the 6,370 total votes.[4] He was re-elected Councillor in 2004,[5] and 2008.[6]

On December 12, 2008, Córdova was elected acting mayor of Pichilemu by a poll of the city's councillors. He replaced Gustavo Parraguez Galarce, who had served as mayor since December 6.[7] The mayor-elect, Marcelo Cabrera, had been unable to assume his duties while under investigation by the local prosecutor on charges of fraud in the Treasury, an affair known as the Boletas Adulteradas (Spanish: Adulterated Tickets) case.[7]

On May 18, 2009, Marcelo Cabrera resumed his duties as mayor,[8] and Córdova continued to work as a councillor.[2] However, Cabrera was removed permanently as mayor on August 19, 2009, leaving Pichilemu temporarily without a mayor.[9]

On September 1, 2009, the councillors of Pichilemu elected Roberto Córdova as mayor of the city[2] during a councillors' meeting.[1] He won the election with 4 votes from 6.[1] Patricio Morales took over Córdova's former role as a councillor until the end of his term, on 6 December 2012.[1]

He was popularly elected mayor of Pichilemu for the first time on 28 October 2012, obtaining 3,507 votes (49.13%).[3]
