Robert X. Golphin (born February 2, 1982) is an American actor, thespian, vocalist, award-winning filmmaker/screenwriter, author, orator/motivational speaker and journalist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His most notable roles are as Dunbar Reed in The Great Debaters, Son in Punch Me and Kevin in the stage-play "The Storm: An Original Pop Rock Musical".
Education
Golphin holds an MFA in Screenwriting from Spalding University, a B.A. in Theater and Film (Magna Cum Laude) from St. Augustine's University and a Diploma in Creative Writing from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
Career
Golphin has had roles in various films and television series including Remember the Daze, "Rounding First" and The Wire. His short film credits includes "Simply Untitled", "Track Marks" and "Un-Perfect".
Golphin has written and/or produced several short film projects. Some of them include Inside of Me, "Romeo & HIS Juliet", "The Bridge" and "Insecure". He also served as a set production assistant on the CBS series, "HACK" during its first season.
In 2011, Golphin was nominated for "Best Actor" for his role in Punch Me at the Atlantic City CineFest (presented by the DBFF: Downbeach Film Festival). He previously garnered that honor at DBFF in 2008 for his role in "Beautiful Man In The Buff".
In 2008, in a CBS/Philly interview with Ukee Washington, Academy Award-Winner Denzel Washington commended Golphin on his acting and entertainment pursuits.
In 2007, Golphin won the 2nd Prize for "Best Young Screenwriter" at the Set In Philadelphia Screenplay Competition. He was awarded the honor by Oscar nominated screenwriter, Stephen J. Rivele ("Nixon", "Ali").
Golphin wrote, directed and produced the stage-plays, "Sinners 7: Plane Ticket To Heaven" and "My Breasts, My Hair". Also, during his final semester of undergraduate studies at St. Augustine's University, he directed and produced an authorized stage medley of Spike Lee's School Daze.
From 2006-2009, Golphin served as an on-air correspondent for Reelblack TV, where he interviewed actors, filmmakers, musicians and celebrities.
At the age of fifteen, Golphin was the first ever inducted 'Legend of Tomorrow' at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's AALHOF: African American Legends Hall of Fame, founded by the late legendary broadcaster Wanda Mason.
Golphin's journalism credits includes The Philadelphia Inquirer 'First Take' Newspaper, The Philadelphia Sunday Sun, SCOOP USA Newspaper, The Manning Times, The Campbell Times, Teen People Magazine and others.
Golphin launched his own production company, Brotherside Entertainment, LLC in November 2010 with three partners who range in age from 15-21. Together they have produced two film projects, the award-winning "Un-Perfect" and "I AM MAN".
Golphin is also the author of the novel, "Abandoning Adam: Confessions of an HBCU Scholar". His most recent directorial effort was the award-winning 2012 drama I Am Man which has been on the virtual and physical film festival and showcase circuit since 2012.
After a six year absence from performing on the stage, Golphin starred as "Kevin" in the new stage-play, "The Storm: An Original Pop-Rock Musical" from March 9–24, 2012 at the NoHo Arts Center in North Hollywood, California. This production served as his musical theatre debut.
One of Golphin's most recent screen roles is as the title character in 2013's "Pretentious: Skylar Avielle", an experimental new media comedy about a Hollywood actor who tries to convince an entertainment reporter that he and his new film will change the world. He portrays the role of "Javier" opposite Gervase Peterson and Brian Anthony Wilson among others in "Underground Kings", a dramatic series pilot that released a trailer on March 13, 2013 and has an unknown release date. He also portrayed the role of "Pastor Jordan" in the stage-play "Misconceptions" in Greeleyville, South Carolina, and "Narrator" for the stage-play "Good Friday" in Sims, North Carolina in March 2013.
Golphin wrote and directed his final student film "The Way Things Are", which was released to the World Wide Web in May 2013. He also starred in the student film "Blue Plate Teleportation", also released to the internet in May 2013.
On May 30, 2013, Golphin was tapped to present author Kimberly C. Roberts at her official book signing/launch party at the Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts in Philadelphia, PA. The book titled "Joyride! The Stars and Stories of Philly's Famous Uptown Theater", brought together legendary musicians in one room including Earl Young of The Trammps and surviving members of The Stylistics, The Intruders and others.
On June 5, 2013, a new R&B demo recording entitled "Kiss You 'Til My Lips Turn Blue" written and performed by Golphin (and composed by James Harris, Jr.) was released via Soundcloud.com.
On Friday, August 30, 2013, Robert X. Golphin (and his co-director/co-producer Victor Brooks, II) released the sneak preview of their upcoming documentary "The Other Side of Hollywood: Do or Die", featuring entertainment legends and rising stars and focusing on the realities of survival and success in Hollywood.
On January 1, 2014, Robert X. Golphin co-stars as "Javier" in the TV crime drama pilot "The Underground Kings", which premieres online at http://www.TheUndergroundKingsSeries.Com. He stars opposite CBS Survivor star Gervase Peterson and HBO's "The Wire" star Brian Anthony Wilson.
On January 3, 2014, the dramatic web series "The Counterparts", executive produced by International Recording Artist Julie McKnight (former wife of Brian McKnight, premieres online at http://www.TheCounterpartsSeries.Com. Robert is a series regular on the show opposite Kristen Gabrielle Sledge (daughter of Grammy Nominated International Recording Artist Kathy Sledge from the group Sister Sledge.
