Robert C. Tyler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brigadier General Robert Charles Tyler (1833-April 16, 1865) was a Confederate General. He is generally credited with being born in MD, although some claim he was born in Jonesborough, Tennessee. He served as an officer on William Walker's filibustering army. Prior to the war he helped organize the Knights of the Golden Circle. Tyler joined the Confederate Army as a Major in 1861 on Benjamin F. Cheatham's staff, and served as Lieutenant Colonel during the Battle of Shiloh. He served as a Colonel and Provost Marshal under Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee. He lost a leg during the Battle of Missionary Ridge.

Tyler subsequently was promoted to Brigadier General in February 1864 and died on April 16, 1865 in the Battle of West Point, one of the last battles of the war and his was the last death in that war of any general officer.
