K. Robert "Rob" Krupicka, Jr. (born February 18, 1971) is an American politician. A Democrat, he has served on the Alexandria, Virginia city council 2003–2012, the Virginia State Board of Education 2009–2012 and, since September 28, 2012,[1] in the Virginia House of Delegates.[2]
Early life
Krupicka was born in Thousand Oaks, California on February 18, 1971.[2][3]
Krupicka graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in economics, and subsequently moved to Alexandria where he met his wife Lisa at the Old Town Safeway. Along with their two daughters, Janelle and Gillian, they live in Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood.[3]
Political career
Krupicka began his civic life as Vice Chair of the Alexandria Community Services Board and as president of the Del Ray Citizens Association. He first ran for a city council seat in 2003, winning election. He was reelected in 2006 and 2009. During his nine years on the council, he promoted mass transit expansion and other non-automotive commuting options, recycling, open space conservation, energy conservation, pre-kindergarten services, small business, and community policing programs. In 2009, Governor Tim Kaine appointed Krupicka to the Virginia State Board of Education.
In 2011, Krupicka contested the Democratic nomination for the Virginia 30th Senate district, which was an open seat due to the retirement of Senator Patsy Ticer. Krupicka ran second to the eventual winner, Adam Ebbin.[4]
In 2012, after the previous delegate for the House of Delegates 45th district resigned, Krupicka announced his candidacy and received the Democratic nomination by winning a primary in early August. Governor Bob McDonnell called a special election for September 4, 2012 and Krupicka was elected over Republican and Libertarian candidates.[5]
