The Rimac Concept One (also styled Concept_One) is a two-seat high-performance electric sports car designed and manufactured by Rimac Automobili. With a total output of 1,088 hp, an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, and a price of US$980,000, Concept One has been described as the world's first electric supercar[3] and the world's fastest accelerating electric automobile as of 2013.[4] In development since 2009, the company expects the car to go into production in 2014.[5]
History
Rimac Automobili, an automobile manufacturing company established in 2009 in Zagreb, Croatia, grew out of its founder Mate Rimac's garage hobby.[6] The company's primary objective was to build an electric supercar,[6] starting, as Rimac put it, "with a blank sheet of paper".[7] Since electric systems for high-performance electric cars were not available on the market, Rimac developed the necessary parts and patented 24 innovations.[3]
When Rimac's 1984 BMW E30 blew its internal combustion engine during one of its races, he made it the company's first test mule, fitting it with a 600 hp electric powertrain.[8] This car, called the "Green Monster", set five Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)-sanctioned acceleration records in April 2011.[8][9] This attracted the attention of the media and potential investors.[6] He also created several more E30 electric model to sell, and after some success, went on to create his own car.
Concept One is set to cost US$980,000 once the serial production starts in 2013.[10] A limited set of 88 units will be offered, with first deliveries expected in 2014. The Concept One has been tested and still needs some adjustments, and a new body will be developed for production.[3][6]
The car was introduced on the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and also shown at the 2012 Paris Concours d'Elegance, where it received positive results.
The first car was delivered to an unnamed Spanish customer in January 2013.[11]
Specifications
With a total output of 811 kW (1,088 hp)[12] and 1,600 N·m (1,200 lbf·ft) of torque, the Concept One will accelerate from 0–97 km/h (0–60 mph) in 2.8 seconds and will have an electronically limited top speed of 304 km/h (189 mph).[10] Each wheel is powered by a separate liquid-cooled permanent magnet electric motor and controlled by the so-called "All Wheel Torque Vectoring System" that distributes the power to the wheels in accordance with user setup and driving conditions.[12][13] Also, the car has the ability to switch the power from front-wheel to rear-wheel drive, the first car with that ability.[citation needed]
The motors are powered by a 91 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery,[2] giving the car a range of 500 km (310 mi) per charge.[7] The car's body is made of carbon fiber.[10] The interior features custom leatherwork and hand-made dashboard components.[10][14]
